Ans:

Next to the bed, which is kept close to the wall, I can see one of the chairs and a tiny table. On that smaller table, the book is kept.

One larger table is placed just opposite to the bed. On the larger table, there is a bottle, a jug, and some fruits.

3. Can you think why Gappu could see the cheese on the jug but Chinky could not?

Ans:The reason why Gappu could see the cheese on the table was because the cheese was kept on top of the jug and Gappu was watching from above. And cheese was kept on a jug which was not visible from down that is why Chinky could not see it.

4. Look at these pictures and discuss why things look wide and big at this end but narrow and small at the other end.

(images will be uploaded soon)

Ans: In comparison to the size of the things on the other end, the things in the picture appear vast and large in the near end. This is because when we look at an object up close, it appears large, whereas when we gaze at it from a distance, it appears small. So, at the end of the picture, the sides of things like railway tracks and candles are closer to us. As a result, it appears to be quite large. The other end, on the other hand, is a long way away. Thus, it looks small.

9. Ismail’s Home

On the phone Ismail told Srijata the route to his house from her house. The route map is shown here.

(image will be uploaded soon)

This is what Ismail told Srijata: “From your house, reach the milk-booth and then take a left turn. From the second crossing take a right turn and go over the bridge. Go straight and then take the first right turn. After about 100 metres you will see a big park. When you cross the park you will come to a side lane. My house is the first house in that lane.

• Did Ismail go wrong somewhere? Can you correct him?

• Show where Srijata will reach if she takes the route he told her.

• Write the directions for going from Ismail’s house to Srijata’s house.

Ans: Yes, Ismail made a mistake by instructing Srijata to take the first right turn off the bridge.

Srijita should walk from her residence to the milk stand and then turn left. She should turn right at the second crossing and cross the bridge. To go to the park, she should continue straight after crossing the bridge and take the first left. Srijita will get closer to her house and further away from Ismail’s if she follows Ismail’s directions.

She should turn left and then right from the second crossing after walking straight.

First, turn right from Ismail's house and then go straight, then take the first left turn after crossing the bridge and then take the second right turn and go straight about 100 meter, we can find a red coloured house of srijata.

Q8.  The numbers on the opposite faces of this box add up to 7.

  1. Can you guess what the box-like thing was?

  2. Which number was on the opposite side of 5?

  3. In the picture, which number will be at the bottom?

(image will be uploaded soon)

  1. Which number will Gibli see if she again turns left from 5?

  2. What will this box look like if you opened it up? Mark the correct picture.

Ans:

  1. The box looks like a die.

  1. If the numbers on the opposite faces of the box add up to 7. Then the number on the opposite side of 5 must be 2 because \[5 + 2 = 7\].

  2. The number on top is 1 thus the number at the bottom must be 6 to make a sum of 7.

  3. If Gibli turns left from 5 then she will see number 1.

  4. The side left from 5 is the side opposite to 4. Thus, the number opposite to 4 must be 3 to make a sum of 7. So if the box is open it looks like figure A.

So, option A is the correct option.

A few examples will help to explain the concepts better. A mouse had climbed up to the ceiling with the help of a balloon string and he could see the entire room from the top and he also found his lost cheese, which was hidden next to the water jug. The mouse wondered why things looked so small from the top because when he was on the floor, everything looked bigger.

So, imagine if you can fly then you will see everything so clearly and differently from the top than what you see when you are on the floor. This is called looking at things from the top view. When we are on the floor, we look at things from the left or right side and we find things bigger. That’s why often we are not able to find our stuff because they get hidden behind other objects.

The objects that are nearer to us look bigger to us but when they are far away from us then they look smaller. Things look different in shapes and sizes when you see them from different views and distances.

So what did we learn? From the top, objects look smaller and clearer. Objects look bigger when they are near us, and look smaller when they are far away from us.

Every object has two sides – the left side and the right side. The direction of any object is directly connected to the position of the object. An object can be towards the left from one position can be towards the right from another position.

Think that you are standing in front of a locked gate that has both front and back views. What do you see? From the front view, you can see a big lock, but when you see the same gate from the back you cannot see the lock. This is because the front view of the gate cannot be seen from the back.

In this chapter, we also learn about left-turn, right-turn, and U-turn. So what are these? They are directions and we use them when we walk on the road or drive in a car. You must have seen people using the Google map to find a location, and the map keeps telling you the directions. Go straight, take a left turn, and then go straight for 500m and then take a right turn. Under the bridge take a U-turn to take the road on the left, and so on. Next time, when you hear it, follow the directions.
