While moving back and forth the particles bump into each other and produce sound. These particles result in a formation of mechanical waves known as sound waves. Sound is measured in frequency.
Sound is a sequence of waves of pressure that propagates through compressible media like air liquid and solid. During the propagation of sound waves the waves are refracted, reflected and altered by the medium by which it travels.
Sound travels through a medium, it cannot travel in vacuum because there is no matter in vacuum to vibrate front and back vacuum is an empty space. So the vacuum sound cannot be heard.
Sound can travel through solid liquid and gas molecules. The sound waves travel through the medium by vibrating the particles in the medium, so every material that is made up of atoms and molecules can act as a medium for sound to travel.
From the above statement we can say that the sound can travel through wood air and water that are listed in the question since it has particles to vibrate. And cannot travel through the vacuum since it has no particle or matter to vibrate.
