Importance of Surface Chemistry in JEE Main

Surface chemistry deals with a process that occurs at the interfaces or surfaces. Here, the surface or interface is represented by dividing the bulk phases either by a slash or hyphen. For example, the interface between the solid and gas can be represented either by solid gas or solid/gas. Because of the complete miscibility, there is no interface between the gases.

The bulk phases we come across in surface chemistry can be of solutions or pure compounds. In general, the interface is composed of a few thick molecules, but its area is based on the size of the particles of bulk phases. Many important processes, noticeable amongst these are corrosion, heterogeneous catalysis, electrode processes, crystallization, and dissolution, which occur at interfaces. The surface chemistry topic finds many applications in analytical work, industry, and daily life situations.

Class 12 Surface Chemistry Revision Notes

The Class 12 chapter on Surface Chemistry explicitly focuses on the topic in a detailed way. In this chapter, you will learn about the way how the particles in specific solutions remain suspended throughout. Also, they never settle down, and why does it happen? Surface chemistry Revision Notes will help the students understand why and how.

Furthermore, it will teach about what is going to take place at the interface between various phases. Therefore, the surface chemistry chapter deals in the processes which occur at interfaces, especially in liquids and gasses. Surface chemistry revision notes will explore various applications in diverse fields.

Sub-Topics Covered Under Surface Chemistry

Let us look at the subtopics that fall under the Surface Chemistry chapter.

  • Adsorption- This topic will explain all about adsorption, its significance, types, and mechanism.

  • Adsorption Isotherm - From this topic, you will learn how the process of adsorption is plotted and how we study it with the help of a graph.

  • Catalysis - Here, students will learn the phenomenon of catalysts, catalysis, and also the role of surface chemistry in catalysis.

  • Classification of Colloids - This topic will explain the classification of colloids based on various properties of the medium and the dispersed phase.

  • Colloids - This section explains what exactly the colloids are, the method of preparation, and their applications.

  • Emulsions - Here, you will learn about what exactly these Emulsions are, their significance in our daily lives, and their applicability in industries as well.

  • Preparation of Colloids - From this topic, students will learn about various techniques involving physical, chemical, and some dispersion methods as well while preparing the colloids.

  • Properties of Colloidal Solutions - This section explores the physical, chemical, optical, and electrical properties of the colloidal solutions.

  • Shape - Selective Catalysis by Zeolites - By this, you can study the interesting concept in more detail. Shape-selective catalysis, a reaction, and the catalysts are known as zeolites.

About the Weightage of Surface Chemistry in Terms of JEE Mains

Surface Chemistry syllabus has a weightage of 17.9% in the competitive exam, JEE Main. The topics tested from the chapter, surface chemistry in JEE Main, are Thermodynamics of Adsorption, Colloids, and Emulsions. On a minimum scale, 1 question is asked from this section. The aspect combined with Chemical Kinetics has a considerable weightage in JEE Advanced paper, also with at least 8 questions.

The 2020 JEE Main January session had only one question on the surface chemistry in every shift, compared to the case in 2019.

Preparation Tips of JEE Main Chemistry

Preparation of JEE Main Chemistry requires not only a focus on concepts and applications but also consistent learning. This also involves the rote learning of equations.

  • Questions from the Chemistry sections are considered unambiguous in nature. Therefore, the attempted questions have a low probability of resulting in negative marks

  • The Syllabus of JEE Main Chemistry is divided into three sections, Physical & General chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry.

  • Candidates appearing for the JEE Main must remember to plan for proper preparation using the material availing from Vedantu for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology.

  • In addition, students should clear their doubts by asking the professors and the important topics should make a note on the revision notes, which can be used to access during their final exams.

  • Besides the traditional preparation methods, there are a few online government portals such as SWAYAM and the newly launched application, Abhyas to ace the preparation method

Why to Choose Vedantu?

Students can undoubtedly choose Vedantu and can avail themselves many benefits, where some of them are given below:

  • With the revision notes provided by Vedantu, students can understand the importance of it by going through it during their exams.

  • They can also clear their doubts with the help of the corresponding expertise subject professors.

  • They can avail of many academic resources or materials such as Question Papers, Topic information, Previous Year’s Papers, study materials, and more.

  • They can also attend the live and interactive sessions given by the expert professors.

The JEE Main 2023 Revision Notes for Chemistry will help the students during their last-minute preparation. Students must solve the important questions related to Surface Chemistry to be more clear with the topic. To download JEE Main 2022 important questions and sample papers, students can visit the official website of Vedantu.

1. What are emulsions and their applications?

Emulsion is one of the important concepts of surface chemistry, where it can be described as a colloidal solution, where both dispersion medium and dispersed phase are liquids, known as Emulsions.

Some of the examples of emulsions are dyes, milk, Paints, vanishing cream, and more.

Emulsions are used in Paints, syrups, Toothpaste, Pigment, Digestion of fats, dyes, and more.

This is a very important chapter that all students who will be appearing in the JEE Mains examinations must prepare well.

2. List out the applications of Surface Chemistry?

From a wider perspective, the surface chemistry topic deals with the interaction of surfaces of a system with the other system, where some aspects work on this principle as given below:

  • Colloid Formation

  • Catalysis

  • Chromatography

  • Electrode Reactions

Surface Chemistry has a primary role in different chemical processes, as given below:

  • Enzymatic reactions at the biological interfaces are found in the membranes and cell walls .
