IIT Roorkee - Introduction

IIT Roorkee is a pioneer in engineering colleges in India which is known for its global excellence. Through its innovations and research in science and technology, IIT Roorkee aims to create a sustainable society that fosters the growth of individuals who are intellectual, innovative, and have entrepreneurial qualities. Students who pass out from this prestigious institute have progressed immensely in technical and social ventures in India as well as abroad. The institute began as a class to teach local youth engineering in 1845 which was aimed at assisting public work, and it was finally established in 1847 as a full-fledged engineering institute. Its civil engineering department is the oldest in India.

Apart from the main campus of IIT Roorkee which is 365 acres, it also has a separate campus measuring 25 acres where courses like Polymer science, paper technology, process engineering, and packing technology are offered.

Qualifying exam: JEE Advanced

Eligibility criteria: Students must have completed 10+2 or any equivalent exam with Physics, Chemistry, and Maths as mandatory subjects. The earlier criteria of 75% in 12th has been waived off and now candidates must lie in the top 20 percentile in their plus 2 exams.

IIT Roorkee Admission Process

The Roorkee IIT college is one of the oldest institutes in Asia and it has made tremendous progress in education, innovation, and entrepreneurship ever since its establishment. The institute has research work in diverse areas like communication, energy and environment, Nanotechnology, Ecosystem, manufacturing, etc. It has proven to be a major hub for education and training not only in India but also amongst foreign nationals.

To get admission into its UG courses, students must go through the joint entrance exam (JEE) which is an all-India competition that allows admissions to all the IITs.

The steps for getting admitted to the UG program involves:

  • Candidates must clear the JEE main exams.

  • Based on the JEE rank, candidates are selected to go through the JEE Advanced exam.

  • After clearing the JEE Advanced, candidates go through 6 rounds of counselling with JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority).

The eligibility for getting into the JoSAA counselling is outlined below:

  • The student must have either secured 75% marks (65% for SC, ST, and PwD categories) in their 12th exam OR they are in the top 20 percentile (category wise) in their respective 12th class or equivalent exam.

  • The candidate must have Physics, Chemistry, and Maths as their compulsory subjects in their qualifying exam.

  • They must have qualified in the JEE Advanced exam. For B. Arch, the candidate must appear for the AAT (Architecture Aptitude Test)  that is conducted under JEE Advanced or appear for NATA.

  • The ranking for the candidates in JEE Mains must be amongst the top 2,45,000.

For applying to IIT Roorkee UG courses, an aspirant must fill the application form which is available online at the official portal of the institute. The application would need details of the academic qualifications of the candidate as well as the preferred course along with all the scanned copies of required documents. Once the application is submitted and IIT Roorkee fees are paid, the application process is over.

IIT Roorkee Application Step-Wise Procedure:

  1. Candidates must visit the official portal of IIT Roorkee for registering themselves.

  2. After registration, log into the portal with valid credentials.

  3. Select the desired course and then choose “Click here to apply.”

  4. Now candidates can fill or update their application form with relevant data like academic qualifications, and other personal details.

  5. Save the entered data into the system.

  6. The candidate must pay the fees in the next step.

  7. Now the “Submit” button must be clicked in order to submit the form.

  8. Next, click on “Print Application” to take a print out of the application form.
