FAQs on NCERT Exemplar for Class 11 Chemistry (Book Solutions)
1. Explain the greenhouse effect.
In Class 11 chemistry, one of the important and frequently asked questions is about the greenhouse effect. During the travel of the infrared rays of the sun from the earth back into the atmosphere, some of the rays are trapped by water vapour, carbon dioxide and other gases (known as greenhouse gases) in order to maintain the earth's temperature. This phenomenon is known as the greenhouse effect. An increase in the amount of greenhouse gases has led to global warming. Some of the adverse effects of global warming are-
The temperature of the earth will increase with the increase in the percentage of carbon dioxide in the air. Growing trees can prevent this because trees will absorb carbon dioxide and give oxygen.
If the temperature of the earth increases by a single percent, it leads to the melting of ice caps in the polar region. It affects the sea level also.
The increase in temperature leads to an increase in the evaporation of water sources like ponds, rivers, lakes, seas, etc. If the water bodies are not stable, several natural calamities may occur like tsunamis, hurricanes, etc.
The only preventive measure is to plant more trees to increase the level of oxygen in the air.
2. What is a chemical bond? How is it formed?
A force of attraction is present between two atoms and ions. This force of attraction leads to the sharing of electrons from one orbit to another orbit. This transfer of electrons is nothing but a bonding bit during the atoms. So it is known as a chemical bond. Every item has a set of orbits. Each orbit has a respective count of electrons, neutrons, protons. The electrons present in the outer energy level will always try to overlap or bond with other atom's electrons. This results in the formation of chemical bonds. Based on the reaction, energy level, the chemical bonds are of different types.
The Types of Chemical Bonds are
Covalent bonds
Polar covalent bonds
Nonpolar covalent bonds
Ionic bonds
Hydrogen bonds
