## Hands of a Clock

• The longhand in the clock is the minute hand.

• The shorthand in the clock is the hour hand.

• In some clocks, a thin long hand is present which is the second clock.

## Numbers in a Clock

• In a clock, 1 to 12 numbers are present.

• The hands of the clock point to any of these numbers all the time.

• Thin lines are present between any two numbers in a clock, representing the minutes.

• If a minute hand moves from one number to the next number, it counts as 5 minutes.

• If a minute hand completes 60 minutes which is equivalent to 1 hour, the hour hand moves from 1 number to the immediate next number.

## Reading Time From a Clock

• Observe which number the hour clock is pointing to.

• Observe which number or which thin line the minute hand is pointing. Count the number of thin lines from 12 which gives the minutes.

• Example: If the hour hand is pointing at the number 5, and the minute hand is exactly pointing at the number 2, then the number of thin lines from 12 to 2 is 10. Then the time is read as 5 hours 10 minutes. This can also be read as 5 past 10. We can simply write it as 5:10.

## Solved Examples on Reading Time

Read the time from the clocks Shown below.

(a)

Ans: Observe the hour hand is pointing at 8 and the minute hand is pointing at 4. On counting the number of lines between 12 and 4, we get 20. So, the time is read as 8 hours 20 minutes.

(b)

Ans: The hour hand is between 6 and 7. So, it will be 6 hours. The minute hand pointing a line after 3, on counting the number of lines after 12, we get 16 lines. So, the time is 6 hours 16 minutes.

(c)

Ans. The hour hand is pointing between 9 and 10. So, it is 9 hours. The minute hand is pointing at the number 9. The number of lines between 12 and 9 is 45. So, the time is 9 hours 45 minutes.

## Solved Examples on Drawing Hands in a Clock for Different Times

You have learnt to note the time from a clock. Now, let’s draw a clock with hands from the given time.

(a) 1:30 (1 Hour 30 Minutes)

Ans: At 1:30, The hour hand will be present between 1 and 2. Count 30 lines from 12 and point to the minute hand. You will get 30 lines at number 6. So, the clock time looks like the below:

(b) 7 hours 46 minutes (7:46)

Ans: At 7:46, The hour hand will be present between 7 and 8. Count 46 lines from 12 and point to the minute hand. You will get 46 lines after 9. So, the clock time looks like the below:

## AM and PM in Time

• We have 24 hours in a day. Using a normal 12 digit numbered clock if it is morning time we use AM after time and if it is afternoon or evening we use PM.

• Example: 5:30 AM means it is 5 hours 30 minutes in the Early morning.

• Example: 11:30 PM means it is 11:30 in the night.

• The time of the day starts at 12:00 AM and ends at 11:59 PM.

## 24-Hour Clock

• In a 24 format time, we don’t use AM and PM while telling the time. We use 1 to 24 numbers to tell the hours. After 12, we count 13,14,15,....24.

• Observe the numbers in red written over each number of the clock. They represent the reading numbers in 24-hour format.

• Example: 2:40 PM in 24-hour format is written as 14:40 i.e.,14 hours 40 minutes, You can see the red number over 2 is 14.

## Dates of a Calendar:

• We have a total of 365 or 366 days in a year.

• We have 12 months in a year. Observe a number of days in each month:

• Writing a Date: While writing a date, we represent the date, month and the year.

Example: 17-02-2022. The date is read as the 17th of February in the year 2022. This method of representation is also called the DD-MM-YYYY format.

4. How many days does the month of October have?

Ans. 31 days

5. At what time in the clock will the hour hand, minute hand and second hand be together?

Ans. At 12:00 AM and at 12:00 PM.
