QUESTION

# Answer the following.(a) How many quarters are there in one whole?(b) How many halves make one whole?(c) How many one-third parts make one whole?

Hint: We need to proceed with denoting quarters, halves and one-thirds into fractions and multiply them with the number of parts we require to get 1 ( whole part ).

(a) A quarter is $\dfrac{1}{4}th$ part of the whole
$= \dfrac{1}{4} \times 4 = 1$
4 quarters makes one whole.
Thus 4 quarters are there in one whole.

(b) A half makes $\dfrac{1}{2}nd$ part of the whole
$= \dfrac{1}{2} \times 2 = 1$
2 halves make one whole.
Thus 2 halves are there in one whole.

(c) A one third part $\left( {\dfrac{1}{3}rd} \right)$ of the whole makes $\dfrac{1}{3}$
$= \dfrac{1}{3} \times 3 = 1$
3 one-third parts make one whole.
Thus 3 one-third parts are there in one whole.

Note: This type of question we need to understand that the whole is 1 complete part of any quantity . One-thirds , halves , quarters are just ways of expressing them as fractions . Note that each one of the fractions would be less than 1 , but there are other ways of expression like double , triple , etc. which are more than 1 whole part of any quantity.
