Hint: As the name indicates virtual images are not real images. A virtual image is formed when the diverging rays of an object meet at a certain point and are formed on the same side of the image.
Complete answer:
Let’s discuss virtual images, as the name indicates virtual images are different from real images. As the image is not real, that is the rays do not focus on a point, these images cannot be shown on a screen. A virtual image can be formed with a diverging lens or a convex mirror as the rays are converging in its extension. It is possible to form these images with the help of a converging mirror or concave mirror, only if the object is within the focal length. Human eye has the shape of a converging lens.
From the above details we can see that, human eye can form or in other words, the human eye can see the virtual image, if the object is placed within the focal length of the eye. The virtual image is formed at the retina, acting as a screen for the image.
As we discussed above the virtual image form with either divergent lens/ convex mirror or with converging lens/ concave mirror. When considering the first case that is, divergent lens/ Convex mirror, the virtual image formed will be magnified. But the virtual image that formed with a converging lens/ concave mirror will be reduced in size when it is compared with the size of the object.
By considering the data discussed, it is understood that the human eye can see virtual images and the virtual image is formed due to the converging rays.
Answer is Option (D) Assertion is incorrect but reason is correct.
Note: The real images are formed with the real intersection of the rays from an object. As the rays are coming to the focus, the real images can be seen on a screen, when the screen is in line with the light source.
