JEE Main Important Questions of S Block Elements

S Block elements in the periodic table are oxygen, sulfur, selenium, and tellurium. These elements have a valency of 2 and normally combine with nonmetals like halogens to form their compounds. They are not very reactive in nature. The S block element plays an important role in bonding in the compounds that need stability. Most of the S block elements are nonmetals, but they are highly reactive and volatile.

S Block Elements

These elements are nonmetals, and their reactivity is between metals and nonmetals. It means they have properties of both nonmetals as well as metals. The electronic configuration is ns2np1. These elements form oxides, sulfides, selenides, or tellurides with nonmetals. They also form nitride with other nonmetals.

About Alkali metals

Alkali metals are very reactive in nature. They have a low melting point and low density. The oxidation state of alkali metal is +1. In compounds, all the atoms lose one electron to form a positive ion. Alkaline earth metals form compounds with oxygen elements having a valency of 2, and this is known as oxides, and these compounds are silicates. The oxidation state of alkaline earth metal is +2 because it loses two electrons to form the positive ion. Magnesium is an element of both alkaline earth metals and alkali metals.

About Alkaline Earth Metals

Alkaline earth metals are very less reactive in nature than alkali metals. They have a high melting point and high density. The oxidation state of alkaline earth metal is +2 because it loses two electrons to form the positive ion. Magnesium is an element of both alkaline earth metals and alkali metals, and they have similar properties.

JEE Main Important Questions for S Block Elements - 1

FAQs on JEE Main S Block Elements Important Questions

1. How to start preparing for Chemistry JEE Main Important Questions of S Block Elements?

The first thing that you must remember is that this exam is tougher than JEE Advanced. You may have already seen the difficulty level of JEE Main from the NCERT textbooks and sample papers. All aspirants should start solving both mocks as well as model papers from the next year itself. Although it's a little too late for 2021 year, a student can check out our chemistry video lectures for a better experience and prepare accordingly for jEE main and score good marks in the chemistry section. Vedantu also provides other free material for students to prepare from which helps them to learn without any hassle. You can find this free material on the website of Vedantu.

2. Do I need to buy new books, or can I use NCERT Chemistry Books?

The good thing is that you don't need to purchase any new books, most of the students believe that they must purchase new books for JEE Main 2022, but this is not true. Most of the students get confused and think that they must buy new books, but we can assure you that it's unnecessary because most of the aspirants don't read any new book for JEE Main Chemistry and still manage to score good marks in this section. It is suggested for all students who are preparing for this exam to first go through the NCERT Chemistry books and then solve previous year's papers, this would definitely help you to get a better grip over the entire syllabus.

3. What are all the topics that students should cover in chemistry?

Answering this question is quite tough because every book has different chapters, and each chapter covers a different set of questions. However, we have mentioned some important topics that you must never miss to solve in your preparation.

a) Chemical Bonding: In this topic, students should know some basic concepts of chemical bonding such as an ionic bond, covalent bond, and metallic bond, along with their examples. Students should also know about the factors which affect the strength of a chemical bond.

b) Electrochemistry: In this topic, students must distinguish between Galvanic cells and Voltaic Cells. They should also know about the chemical equation for battery preparation.

c) Redox Reactions: In this topic, students must differentiate oxidation-reduction reactions with examples. They must also know how these reactions are carried out in the laboratory or industrial processes.

d) Chemical Kinetics: In this section, students must solve the various problems related to rates of reactions and rate laws. They must also know about chemical equilibrium and solution concentration.

e) Atomic Structure: In this topic, students need to learn about the structure of an atom and how it is composed. They should also know about the types of nucleus such as protons and neutrons.

f) Periodic Table: In this section, students must learn about various elements present in the periodic table. Further, they should understand the formation of ionic compounds by using their knowledge of the electron.

g) Ionic Bonding: This part is quite difficult because here the student has to learn almost everything which he/she has learned till now. This topic generally contains questions from the earlier topics which you have studied. It is suggested to give special importance to this section etc.

4. How many questions are asked from S Block in JEE main?
