When it comes to the head of the state's government in India, it is the Chief Minister who takes all the responsibility. Every state is appointed with a Chief Minister, and currently, the CM of Maharashtra is Uddhav Thackeray, and he has been in this post since 28 November 2019. In this article, we will talk about all CM of Maharashtra since 1960 because Maharashtra was formed in 1960, and before that, it was known as Bombay. You might be wondering who was the first chief minister of Maharashtra. It was Yashwantrao Balwantrao Chavan.

Who Was The First Chief Minister Of Maharashtra?

Yashwantrao Balwantrao Chavan, the first chief minister of Maharashtra, was appointed on 1 May 1960. He served for two years, 202 days, and then left the post on 19 November 1962. His birthdate is 12 March 1913, and he died on 25 November 1984. He was not only the first CM of Maharashtra, but at the same time, he was the last CM of Bombay state. 


The last post that he was appointed was as the Deputy Prime Minister of India in 1979. He was a writer, social activist, and a robust Congress leader. In India, people used to call him the Leader of Common People. For the betterment of the farmers, Yashwantrao Balwantrao Chavan highlighted social democracy in his articles and speeches. 


2nd Chief Minister of Maharashtra 

In the list of chief ministers of Maharashtra, Marotrao Shambshio Kannamwar stays in the second position, and he took office on 20 November 1962. And after serving the post for one year, four days, he left the post on 24 November 1963. In 1957, he represented the Saoli Vidhan Sabha constituency and was re-elected in 1962 elections from Saoli to the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha. 


He was born on 10 January 1900 and was found dead on 24 November 1963 in the office.  He gained a lot of respect in Maharashtra and currency. There are various legacies under his name. KDK College of Engineering was named in his honour, which is situated in Nagpur. Also, Kannamwar Nagar was time named after him. 


3rd Chief Minister of Maharashtra 

In the Maharashtra cm list, P. K. Sawant claims the 3rd position, and he was appointed on 25 November 1963, and he merely served for nine days and left his position on 4 December 1963. He is the only CM of Maharashtra who served for only nine days. He was the state’s home minister before he was appointed as the CM. Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth is an agricultural university, which was remanded after Sawant in the year 2001. 


4th Chief Minister of Maharashtra 

In the Maharashtra cm list, Vasantrao Phulsing Naik stays at the 4th position, and to this date, he has been the longest-serving CM of Maharashtra; this shows his leadership quality and the support he received from the people of the state. He started as the CM on 5 December 1963 and ended on 20 February 1975. He has served for 11 years, 77 days, which is quite remarkable. He has a bold name in the Maharashtra Chief Minister list.


Talking about his early career, during 1952-1957, he served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of MP (Madhya Pradesh). In addition to that, he was appointed as Deputy Minister for Revenue of MP.  He has also served in various other posts such as Minister for Agriculture, Minister for Cooperation in 1957, and Minister for Revenue of Maharashtra. He died on 18 August 1979 in Singapore. 


5th Chief Minister of Maharashtra 

In the Maharashtra chief minister list, the 5th position is taken by Shankarrao Bhavrao Chavan, who was appointed on 21 February 1975. He served the post for two years, 84 days, and left the office on 16 May 1977. One interesting fact about Shankarrao Bhavrao Chavan is that he served as the CM of Maharastra twice, from 13 March 1986 until 26 June 1988. From 1988 to 1989, he was appointed as the Finance Minister of India, and from 21 June 1991 to 16 May 1996, in the P. V. Narasimha Rao cabinet, he served as Home Minister of India. 


He also served the same position from 31 December 1984 to 12 March 1986 in the Rajiv Gandhi cabinet. In memory of Shankarrao Bhavrao Chavan, there were various colleges and chowks remanded, which include Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College & Hospital, MMM's Shankarrao Chavan Law College, NWCMC's Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Auditorium, SBS's Shankarrao Chavan Memorial, Shankarrao Chavan Chowk, Shankarrao Chavan Chowk and more.


6th Chief Minister of Maharashtra 

Vasantrao Banduji Patil takes the 6th position in the Maharashtra chief minister list, and he served from 17 May 1977 to 18 July 1978 and yet again from 2 February 1983 to 1 June 1985. In addition to that, he was appointed as the Governor of Rajasthan from 1985 to 1987.  Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was the ideal of Vasantrao Banduji Patil, and during the freedom fight, he believed that morchas and satyagraha would not be enough to offer them freedom. He was the first mass leader when it comes to Maharashtrian politics. 


7th Chief Minister of Maharashtra 

In the chief minister of Maharashtra list, the 7th position is taken by Sharad Govindrao Pawar, and he served as the CM for one year, 214 days. He was appointed on 18 July 1978, and he left the post on 17 February 1980. He has been in public service for over 60 years. Apart from the post CM, he was appointed as  Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Defence in the Indian Government. 


Moreover, he was the president of the  Nationalist Congress Party, which is the founder after the separation from the Indian National Congress in the year 1999. He was also the chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India from 2005 to 2008. From 2010 to 2012, he was appointed as the president of the popular International Cricket council.


8th Chief Minister of Maharashtra 

The 8th Chief Minister of Maharashtra was Abdul Rehman Antulay, who was appointed on 9 June 1980, and he served for one year, 217 days as he left the post on 12 January 1982. He was also a Member of Parliament and a union minister for Minority Affairs of India. He was charged with extorted money case for trust and was forced to resign from CM of Maharashtra. 


9th Chief Minister of Maharashtra 

Babasaheb Anantrao Bhosale was the 9th Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He served from 21 January 1982 to 1 February 1983. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi appointed Bhosale as the CM and was only chosen for 377 days. However, in the short tenure, Bhosale made many bold decisions, including free education for girls. 


10th Chief Minister of Maharashtra 

Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar was the 10th CM of Maharashtra, and he was appointed on 3 June 1985. He served for 276 days and left the position on 6 March 1986. Before serving as the CM, he was a leader of the Indian National Congress party. He resigned from the post of CM because the Bombay High Court charged him for helping her daughter to clear MD examinations. He died at the age of 89 on 5 August 2020 due to COVID-19. 


11th Chief Minister of Maharashtra 

Sudhakarrao Rajusing Naik was the 11th CM of Maharashtra, and he served from 25 June 1991 to 22 February 1993. He was popular as the hero of Jalkranti because he initiated the irrigation revolution in Maharashtra.
