Karnataka Chief Minister List: 1947 to 2021

The 23rd Chief Minister of Karnataka swore in on the 28th of July, 2021, at 11 a.m. at the Raj Bhawan.  Basavaraj Bommai, who belongs from the well-known and politically influential Lingayat community, took to the seat of the Chief Minister after B.S. Yediyurappa resigned from the post. Before these two names, there were 21 other names on the Karnataka chief minister list. The list begins from the time India started being a free country in 1947.

Before we go on to the list, we must discuss the former CM of Karnataka, who resigned before the end of his term. After that, you can check out the Karnataka all CM list. B.S. Yediyurappa was the former Chief Minister of Karnataka. He resigned from the post of Chief Minister of Karnataka on the 26th of July, 2021.  This was after two years since he took oath as the CM of the state. Following the protocols, he tendered his resignation to the Governor of Karnataka at Raj Bhawan.

Why did the Former CM of Karnataka Resign After Two Years of Forming the Government?

If you had not already known this, this is the fourth time that B.S. Yediyurappa has resigned from public office. It is said that he never completes his full term as CM of a state. The senior politician is known to be one of the best assets and the most trusted strongman of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka. It becomes even more surprising to know how he is never able to complete a five-year term in the Chief Minister’s office.

He has resigned from the post of the CM of Karnataka thrice before, and on the 26th of July, 2021, it was his fourth time. Here are all the times he resigned from the post of CM of Karnataka in the past.

First Time: 19th of November, 2007

His second shortest spell of holding the office as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, B.S. Yediyurappa was on the CM’s chair for a mere eight days before he resigned. It was a historic event when the BJP formed the government for the first time in any state in South India in 2007.

Although it was not long when the BJP government collapsed within a week, it was because their ally, JD(S), voted against them during the no-confidence motion. B.S. Yediyurappa decided to face the no-confidence motion. However, after the debate, just before the no-confidence motion was going for voting, he resigned from the post of the Chief Minister of Karnataka.

Second Time: 31st of July, 2011

This was B.S. Yediyurappa’s longest spell as the CM of Karnataka. The ex-CM of Karnataka was forced to step down from the post after he was indicted by the then Lokayukta Justice Santosh N Hegde on reports of illegal mining.

The reports alleged that Yediyurappa, along with a few other cabinet members of the then Karnataka Government led to a loss of ₹16,085 crores to the exchequer through acts of illegal mining in the Ballari district.

Third Time: 19 May 2018

His longest spell as the CM of Karnataka was followed by his shortest spell in the office, which lasted for just two and a half days. This was when no party got a clear majority in the Assembly elections of Karnataka held in May 2019. Although the Congress and JD(S) had announced their post-poll alliance, the then Karnataka Governor Vajubhai R Vala invited Yediyurappa to form the government and prove his majority within 15 days.

The decision was challenged in the apex court by both parties. The court gave just one day’s time to B.S. Yediyurappa to prove his majority. He then stepped down from the chief minister's post on 19 May 2018 without going into the trust voting session to prove his majority on the floor of the Karnataka Assembly.

Fourth Time: 26th of July, 2021

After the above event, BJP successfully formed their government a year later, and B.S Yediyurappa again became the CM of Karnataka 2019. After facing dissidence within his own party and charges of mismanagement during the COVID crisis, he resigned from the post on the day that marked two years of his cabinet’s governance. This ended the reign of the former CM of Karnataka and was his last spell as the Karnataka CM 2019.
