Who Made Indian Railways More Efficient?

Lalu Prasad, one of the best railway ministers of India,  turned around Railways, and the Railways were now making a profit. Since that is where the money is always, he had been focusing on the freight segment.

During his tenure, the Dedicated Freight Corridor was established. This major infrastructure project was a success. Ro-Ro freight cars, as used in Konkan Railway, were also suggested by him to be widely distributed. RoRo allows a truck to pick up cargo from your warehouse and then goes on to park itself on a train. It travels a very long trunk distance by rail. The truck gets off at the nearest freight station and then does the last mile to deliver the goods to the warehouse. This not only reduces costs but also reduces truck traffic on the highways and fuel consumption.

He also had some remarkable ideas for passenger traffic. They included flexible station quotas and better use of rakes. He also suggested using vacant railway land, the airspace above yards and tracks for building construction.

Lalu was hailed as one of the most respected Rail ministers. He hiked fair amounts of trains and converted normal express into superfast, which increased Indian railway revenue.

Fun Facts:

The fastest train was the 12002 New Delhi Habibganj Shatabdi Express, which had a speed of 150 km/h. To learn more about India's fastest train, visit the Vande Bharat Express blog.

In 1832, a plan to establish a railway system in India was presented for the first time. However, no further steps were taken for over a decade. Private entrepreneurs were allowed to establish a railway system in India by Lord Hardinge, Governor-General of India. The East India Company was requested to help them, and two new railway companies were established. The UK saw a lot of interest and created a rapid rail system within a few years. In 1851- 12-22, Indian Railways opened their first train. It was used to transport construction materials in Roorkee. One year later, on 1853-04-16, the first passenger train service between Thana, Bombay, and Bori Bunder was launched. It covered a distance of 34 km (21 mi) and was pulled by three locomotives: Sahib Sindh Sultan. This was India's formal introduction to railways.
