Her father laughed at her statement and said, “Don’t worry. Let me show you something very interesting. Bring a potato, an egg and some tea leaves for me in the kitchen.”

The Father and His Demonstration

He told her to fetch some water and take three similar bowls. He then put a potato in one, an egg in the second, and tea leaves in the third. He put the same amount of water in the three bowls and set them in the gas oven for 15 minutes.

Rita asked, “What are trying to do? I don’t understand a thing.” Her father said, “Have patience for 15 minutes and you will surely learn something.”

She eagerly waited for 15 minutes but did not happen except the water started to boil. After 15 minutes, her father asked her to put off the gas oven and bring the bowls to him. She did it carefully.

The Father’s Story of Adversity

He explained to her, “Do you see this potato? It is not hard anymore. It has become soft and nice.”

He then showed the egg and said, “Do you see the egg? It has become hard inside.” He then showed the tea leaves and said, “The tea leaves have changed the colour of the water.”

He then asked, “What did you learn from this?” Rita was confused. She thought her father was making fun of her. She felt irritated and asked her father, “Tell me the answer quickly. I didn’t understand a thing.”

His father explained, “All these three things went through the same adverse situation. They were boiled for 15 minutes. The potato was strong and hard but become soft. The opposite thing happened to the egg. It has become hard from being soft. The tea leaves, on the other hand, have made the water beautiful and aromatic.”

Rita said, “So? It happens all the time.”

Her father said, “You did not understand. These three things reacted differently to the same situation. The egg became stronger whereas the potato gave up. The tea leaves made something remarkable and nice. It is on you how you will react to adverse conditions and decide your life.”

It was crystal clear to Rita. She understood the life lesson her father wanted to explain. She said, “Only I can decide whether I want to be an egg, a potato or tea leaves?”
