This story explains the life of a deaf child and is narrated by a young boy named Sam, who is apparently deaf. He goes to a public school and is ridiculed by his classmates there for wearing hearing aids. He tells them one day that wearing hearing aids or not is not his choice and that he has to wear it in order to help him hear better, but they still continue to laugh and make fun of him. Sam gives a brief description about his character, as a shy and timid boy who is interested in reading books. During recess, Sam went up to his classmates and asked them if he could play along with them but they refused and proceeded to mock him for his hearing aids, as usual.

Ever since then, it is assumed that he has stopped wearing his hearing aids. One day, he didn’t know what to do so he asked his maths teacher for advice. He told Sam to wear his hearing aids to which he replied that if he did, his classmates would make fun of him. The teacher immediately warned the class that if they still insisted on mocking Sam then he would send them to detention, but they clearly didn’t follow that rule during recess. Sam then went home with a heavy heart and expressed his concerns to his parents. His parents just shrugged it off and promised him everything will be alright. The next day, it seemed that things did turn out to be alright as there was a new student and teacher in the school the next day.

Mr. Mc’Honey was a substitute teacher who turned up to their class the next day since their class teacher was not going to be there for a while. Mr.Mc’Honey turned out to be a daily strict teacher so his classmates hesitated to make fun of him in the teacher’s presence. During the start of term 4, a new student named Olive joined the class and was also deaf like Sam, to his pleasant surprise. When he asked if he could be friends and play with her, she readily accepted and Sam was really happy. To make things better, Mr.Mc’Honey had sent all the students who had made fun of Sam’s hearing aids to detention. Ever since Mr.Mc’Honey and Olive entered Sam’s school life, he has always been looking forward to going to school and he has never been happier.
