Give and Take:
The concept of give and take is an important aspect of our day to day lives. It is actually a standard practice in business or any buying and selling activities.
Whenever we need goods or services , we pay a certain price for the goods or services provided. The goods or services are (take) and the price is (give).
For example, if someone buys a chocolate from the shopkeeper he/she has to pay a certain price to him. The act of paying the price is nothing but “Give” and the act of taking chocolate in return is nothing but “Take”
The most common and most widely used medium of exchange in practice is Money.
By giving money one can buy goods, such as ice creams and other edibles , by paying bills such as electricity, water bill in return for using them etc.
The basic concept in “Give and Take” is: The more and the better the goods and we need the more the price we give.
Addition in Give and Take:
When we “Give” two or more times or if we give two or more quantities of the same or different kind in different amounts , in order to find the total we use addition.
For example, say, if you give 5 Rs for a boy and 5 Rs for a girl , the total amount given will be 5+5 = 10.
This concept can be applied to all such addition cases. Another example of this is if someone gives you 5 kg sugar and 5 kg rice, the total weight with you is 10 kg although quantities are different to find weight we still add.
Solved Example 1: Sam has read 27 books and Babli has read 43 books. What is the total number of books read?
Ans: Given , Number of books Sam read = 27
Number of books Babli read = 43
Total number of books = 43 + 27= 70
Therefore the total number of books read is 70
Solved Example 2: 76 Men and 54 Women were waiting in the Queue. Find the total number of people waiting in the queue.
Ans: Given , Number of Men waiting in the queue = 76
Number of Men waiting in the queue = 54
Total number of people waiting in the queue = 76 + 54 = 130
Therefore the total number of waiting in the queue are 130
Subtraction (difference) in Give and Take:
Whenever we are required to find the remaining quantity after giving something , all we have to do is take the difference between total and quantity given.
Say, the target for the team is 250 and the team has already scored 100, the remaining runs required would be 250-100 = 150.
For example if in cricket a team needs 200 to win and have already scored 80 runs, to find the remaining runs we subtract total (200) from already scored runs (80) 200-80 = 120 runs. etc…
Solved Examples 1: In a cricket match, Sri Lanka made 246 runs. India has made 223 runs. How many more runs does India need to win?
Ans: To win India must make 246 runs.
Runs India needs to win = 246 – 223
Runs needed =23
Therefore India needs 23 more runs to win the match against Sri Lanka.
Solved Examples 2: Geeta had Rs 468 in her purse. She bought a book for Rs 123. How much money is left in her purse?
Ans: Money left in her purse will be a difference of 468 and 123 as 123 is spent on purchasing the book.
Money left in her purse is Rs 468 – Rs 123 = 345.
Therefore, Money left in her purse is Rs 345
Solved Example 3: Fatima's mother sent her to the market to buy some things. She gave her Rs 345. Fatima bought 1 kg ghee for Rs 227. The shopkeeper gave her back Rs 98.(Kilogram is written as kg.) Did the shopkeeper give her the right amount?
Ans: The total amount with Fatima is 345.
The price of 1 Kg Ghee = 227.
Now the amount the shopkeeper has to return to Fatima can be given as 345 - 227 = 118.
But it is said that the shopkeeper gave Rs 98 to Fatima.
Therefore the shopkeeper has to give 118 - 98 = 20 Rs back to Fatima more
Therefore the shopkeeper did not fatima the right amount and should return her Rs 20 more.
Solved Example 4: Sam noted the electricity metre readings of her house. Last month's reading was 118 units. This month's reading is 193 units. How much electricity did she use in one month?
Ans: The electricity metre reading Sam noted of last Month = 118 Units
The reading of this month = 193 units
Now to find out the reading of this month we need to subtract the final reading of this month (193) with last month reading (118) as the reading started from 118.
Therefore the electricity used in one month = 193 - 118 = 75 Units.
Solved Example 5: Savita bought a shirt for Rs 225 and trousers for Rs 165. How much money did she spend altogether?
Ans: The Price of Shirt paid by savita = Rs 225
The price trousers paid by Savita = 165
The total money spend can be given by adding the money spent on pant (225) and money spent on trouser (165)
Therefore the money spent altogether is given by 225 + 165 = Rs 390.
Numbers can form interesting patterns.
The patterns are based on certain rules that exist between the numbers and are the base to form the pattern.
If we begin with an even number and count backwards in two, we will get the following pattern: 20, 18, 16,.....
Example: To find the pattern, we must examine the difference between one number and the one that follows it. Consider the following pattern: 15,25,35,45….
Here, the difference between 15 and 25 is ten. And the difference between 25 and 35 is ten. And the difference between 35 and 45 is again ten. Each time, it adds 10 to the preceding number.
Find the Missing numbers
1. 100, 200, 300 _,_,600,_,
Ans: The difference between 200 and 100 is 100, likewise between 300 and 200 is 100
Therefore the pattern is the difference between two consecutive numbers is 100 and hence the next number after 300 is 400 , the next number is 500 and so on..
Therefore the required pattern is
100 , 200 , 300 , 400, 500 , 600 , 700
2. 50, 150, 250, 350,_,_,_,_
Ans: The difference between 150 and 50 is 100 likewise between 250 and 150 is 100
Therefore the pattern is the difference between two consecutive numbers is 100 and hence the next number after 350 is 450 , the next number is 550 and so on..
Therefore the required pattern is
50, 150, 250, 350, 450 , 550 , 650 , 750
1.Indu’s pencil is 25 cm long. Jyoti’s pencil is 6 cm long. Whose pencil is longer? How much longer?
2. Ajay cooked chapatis in 25 minutes. Then he made daal in 15 minutes. How much time did he take to cook both things?
3. 125, 150, 175, 200 ,_ ,_, 275,_
1. Indu’s pencil is longer
It is long by 25-6 = 19 cm
2. Time he took to cook both the things= 25 + 15 = 40 minutes.
