Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry is one of the most prestigious medical institutions of India. This institution offers a total of 200 seats for the medical aspirants, out of which 150 seats are available at its Puducherry campus and the rest 50 seats are available at its Karaikal campus. The updated JIPMER exam pattern will be published by the institute on its official website together with JIPMER 2020 information brochure. The entrance exam for JIPMER is tentatively scheduled to be held in June first week, 2020.

JIPMER Paper Pattern- Overview

The entrance exam for JIPMER is going to be conducted in an online mode. The questions of JIPMER 2020 will be set from the 10+2 syllabus of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. There will be a total of 200 multiple choice type questions in the entrance exam. Aspirants are suggested to download the information brochure of JIPMER 2020 from the official website and go through the exam pattern details. The JIPMER exam pattern is published particularly to help the aspirants with an idea of the marking scheme, repetitive concepts, types of questions and topic-wise weightage as well. This test is a computer-based one and the JIPMER total marks is 800.

The test duration for JIPMER 2020 will be of two and a half hours and aspirants may note there will be no recess in between the exam. Since about 2 lacs aspirants appear for JIPMER, the exam is scheduled to be held in two shifts: morning shift and afternoon shift. The shift allocation is done on a random basis and requests for shift alterations will not be entertained. The duration of both shifts is enlisted below.

JIPMER Question Paper Pattern

The JIPMER exam pattern 2020 that is yet to be published by the JIPMER authorities, will cover the types of questions asked in the previous years and the marking scheme in particular. Aspirants must note that the medium of this entrance examination is English and no other choice of language is available for the same. Apart from the syllabi of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, aspirants will also need to prepare for English Language Comprehension and Logical and Quantitative reasoning.

In the entrance examination of JIPMER the number of questions asked is 200 and all of these questions are expected to be of objective type. There will be four options provided for every question and only one of them will be the correct answer. Since this is a computer-based examination, aspirants will have to save their responses before moving on to the next question. They can also mark any of the questions for review later and can change the response for it, once they are done with the rest of the questions. 


Aspirants must go through all the concepts of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology from the syllabi of classes 11 and 12, thoroughly to secure a good score in this entrance examination. As stated in the JIPMER exam pattern, all three subjects have equal weightage in the examination. The weightage for the subjects: Logical and Quantitative Reasoning, and English Language and Comprehension, is one-sixth of that of the other three subjects. As of now, the JIPMER authorities have not released any official syllabus for the entrance examination on their website. The syllabus for this examination coincides with that of the syllabi of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology from 10+2 CBSE and state boards level.

 JIPMER Exam Pattern - Marking Scheme

Aspirants will be awarded 4 marks for each correct answer thereby making the JIPMER total marks is 800. Many aspirants ask the question: is there negative marking JIPMER 2020? Well, in this regard, aspirants are suggested to answer every question carefully, since one mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer. For the unattempted questions in JIPMER negative marking is not there. Therefore, aspirants should only answer the questions that they are sure of, instead of running the risk for negative marking.
