Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) is an institute of national importance located in Pondicherry, the capital of the union territory of Puducherry (India). The beginning of the institute can be dated back to 1823 when it started as a medical school called Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry by the French Government. JIPMER gained the prestige of being one of the premier Indian medical institutions in 2008 under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. With an initiative to expand, JIPMER has set up new campuses in Karaikal and an outreach centre at Yanam.

MBBS Admission at JIPMER
The M.B.B.S. Degree programs at JIPMER are concentrated mainly on health improvement, disease prevention and cure as well as the basic understanding of the human body and various ailments. Admission to undergraduate courses in JIPMER is now done through the NEET examination. Earlier, JIPMER conducted a separate examination for admission to undergraduate courses. Aspirants who are willing to take admission in the MBBS programs should be a NEET qualifier. Also, aspirants need to fulfil the other eligibility criteria. Candidates need to pass the Class 12 Board or Equivalent exam with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English as main subjects in Classes 11 and 12. It is highly important for candidates to complete all the admission-related formalities on time. Candidates need to note that NEET is the mandatory examination that one needs to clear for admission to various undergraduate programs at JIPMER. As admission to MBBS JIPMER will be done on the basis of the NEET score, candidates need to focus on the exam preparation.

The registration process of JIPMER 2023 will commence from the 6th April 2023. The form will be filled online.
Before filling the application form, candidates must go through the complete eligibility criterion.
Candidates have to keep certain details and documents ready before filling the application form like personal and academic details, scanned passport size photograph and signature, valid mobile number and email id etc.
The Application process of JIPMER 2023 will be in various stages – Online Registration, filling the application form, uploading of photograph and signature and paying the application fee.
The Application form must be submitted before the last date i.e. the second week of April 2023.
All the details in the application form must be filled correctly as no modification or correction in the form will be allowed later.
Programmes Offered At JIPMER
JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education Research) offers many courses as well as certification programmes for students to impart knowledge and quality education in them. Following are some of the programmes that are available for students.
Undergraduate (UG) Programmes:
MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery): MBBS is the most sought-after course at JIPMER. Every year, lakhs of candidates apply for JIPMER admission for MBBS course. However, only a few get through who get an opportunity to study at JIPMER and pursue their ambition of becoming a successful doctor.
B.Sc (Bachelor of Science): JIPMER offers B.Sc programmes for students interested to pursue a degree in Science. Admission to the course is made every year. Under B.Sc programs, the courses available are B.Sc Nursing (Which is a 4 years degree course), B.Sc in Allied Medical Sciences which is a three-year course. In Allied Medical Sciences, the courses available are Medical Laboratory Technology, Cardiac Laboratory Technology, Neuro Technology, Dialysis Technology, Nuclear Medicine Technology, Radiotherapy Technology, etc. The total number of seats available in the B.Sc courses are over 130.
Postgraduate (PG) Programmes: The available courses under the PG programme are M.D., M.S., M.Sc and M.CH. Admission to MD/MS courses are done two times per year i.e. during January and July sessions. The total number of seats available under M.D/M.S courses are 200. Students can apply on the official website of JIPMER for the same.
M.D (Doctor of Medicine): The duration of the course is 3 years. The specializations available in JIPMER under M.D programme are Anatomy, Anesthesiology, Biochemistry, Blood Transfusion and Immuno Hematology, Community Medicine Dermatology Venereology and Leprology, Emergency Medicine, Forensic Medicine, General Medicine, Microbiology, Nuclear Medicine, Pathology, Pediatrics, Pharmacology, Physiology, Psychiatry, Pulmonary Medicine, Radio-diagnosis and Radiotherapy.
M.S (Master of Surgery): The branches available are General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, etc.
M.Sc (Master of Science): Students can either pursue M.Sc in Allied Medical Science or M.Sc in Nursing. M.Sc. in Allied Medical Sciences include Medical Biochemistry, Medical Physiology, Microbiology, Medical Physics, etc. M.Sc. in Science at JIPMER is a 2-year course, except for Medical Biochemistry which is for 3 years. Students can also pursue the Master of Public Health (MPH) which is a 2 years course plus a one-year compulsory internship.
Super Speciality Programmes: JIPMER also offers certain Super Specialty courses. Admission to these courses is done biannually. For more information, students can refer to the official website.
Fellowship Programmes: Fellowship programmes at JIPMER are a one-year course in specializations like Diabetology, Critical Care, Cardiac and Neuro Anesthesiology, etc. However, there are only 12 seats available in total under fellowship courses.
PhD Programmes: Admission to PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) courses are done annually. Some of the options available in JIPMER for PhD are Biochemistry, Physiology, Microbiology, Pathology, Medicine, etc.
Diploma Programmes: JIPMER offers Post Basic Diploma in Nursery which is a one-year course. The branches are Critical Care, Operation Room, Neonatal, etc.
Certification Programmes: JIPMER provides Emergency Medical Technician Certificate Course (EMTC) for 1 year. The seats available are 20.

The various departments available at JIPMER are as follow:
Advanced Centres: This department includes JISPH (JIPMER International School of Public Health), Regional Cancer Centre and Transplantation Services. JISPH offers the MPH program with a maximum intake of 30 students. The Department of Radiotherapy and Regional Cancer Centre is a full-fledged cancer centre that offers services to around 40,000 cancer patients every year.
Ancillary Services: This includes the Animal House, Central Library, Central Workshop, Central Stores, hostels, etc.
Medical Department: JIPMER has a huge medical department with branches including Cardiology, Clinical Immunology, Dermatology and STD, Endocrinology, Medical Oncology, Medicine, Neonatology, etc. These departments are fully furnished with the best patient care and all modern amenities and equipment.
Pre and Para Clinical: This department includes Medical Education, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Preventive and Social Medicine, etc.

Admission in JIPMER
One has to qualify NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) in order to get a seat in Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research under MBBS programs. Earlier, JIPMER exams were conducted separately. For admission, students must be an Indian Citizen, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) or National Residents of India (NRI).
