Working with Poem

1. Taking words that come at the end of lines, write five pairs of rhyming words. Read each pair aloud.

For example, pond — beyond

Ans: Five pairs of rhyming words:

  1. Duck-luck

  2. Hop-stop

  3. Pond-beyond

  4. Back-quack

  5. Bold-cold

2. Complete the dialogue.

Duck : Dear Kangaroo! Why don’t you ____________

Ans: give me a ride on your back. I’ll sit quietly and just quack all day and see the beautiful world around me, beyond this pond.

Kangaroo : With pleasure, my dear Duck, though _____________

Ans: you are wet and your cold feet might give me rheumatism.

Duck: That won’t be a problem. I will ______________

Ans: wear socks and a shrug and also smoke a cigar every day to avoid the cold.

3. The Kangaroo does not want to catch ‘rheumatism’. Spot this word in stanza 3 and say why it is spelt differently. Why is it in two parts? Why does the second part begin with a capital letter?

Ans:

In this line, the word ‘rheumatism’ is divided into two parts and spelt differently in order to rhyme with ‘kangaroo’. In the changed spelling of rheumatism, ‘Roo’ rhymes with ‘kangaroo’. In the second part of the spelling, ‘Matiz’ begins with a capital letter because it is the initial letter of the sentence. Every line in a poem begins with a capital letter even if it is continued from the previous line. So, this is done in the poem to magnify the poetic effect.
