The whole chapter is divided into different segments based on years and what followed on those years.

NCERT Class 8 English Honeydew Chapter wise Solutions

1757-1849

The chapter first highlights the coming of the Britishers with the initial purpose of doing business. At that time, the princes and the Mughals were still ruling. But our princes were busy in fighting their own battles and the Britishers took advantage of them and started settling themselves in India by taking the cities one by one. Only one ruler Tipu Sultan fought the Britishers bravely but eventually, died while fighting them. There were mixed reactions by the citizens of India when it came to the British Rule in India. Some thought it would bring prosperity, however, the majority of the population was not happy.

1765-1836

This era saw many unethical practises started by religious leaders. People lost self-respect among them no matter the class or caste. This was not the only case, the Britishers started oppressing the Indian artisans who were exceptional in their work. They feared that no one would buy imported products from Britain, if the native artists continued creating these exceptional products. So, to overcome this, they started cutting thumbs of the Indian artisans and made their imports tax free to make huge profits.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy: The Renaissance Man (1772-1833)

When the whole country was plunged in the darkness of evil practises and prejudices, one social reformer came into existence. This is where the NCERT English for Class 8 Chapter 3 introduces you to Raja Ram Mohan Roy. He taught everyone that the motive of every religion is the same, to maintain peace and harmony and gave people basic sense and practical knowledge. He went to England to ask the rulers to pay attention towards India’s economic and cultural stability and prosperity. He even started his own newspaper to criticize their working and make people aware. The Britishers found this speculative and closed the press.

The Oppression and Dissatisfaction (1765-1856)

The Britishers brought new laws and regulations that stated that the Indians will be sent to jail without any judicial trial. The goods that were exported from India were made by the Indian farmers and labourers without any break and in pain. This was the major oppression people faced during the Raj. Honeydew Class 8 Chapter 3 tells you about the dissatisfaction the British rule brought. They made new education reforms so that the medium of education would be English so that they could use Clerks at half salary. But this backfired as now the educated people could understand what was happening.

The Revolt (1857)

The Revolt of 1857 was the mark of the beginning of the end of the British era. People have had enough and now started revolting against the Britishers. It started from Meerut and the sepoys marched towards Delhi where Bahadur Shah Jaffar was residing. From there the revolt spread like a rebellion. The new land policies made the landlords lose their lands and they were fused with anger. This revolt started a spark in the minds and heart of people and then stopped when India got Independence in 1947.
