1. Which is greater:
(a) $0.3$ or $0.4$
Ans: Since$0.3$ and $0.4$ are having the same number of terms after the decimal point. So they are like decimals.
For comparison of decimals, use the direct approach of comparing the value of digits.
Since, $3< 4$
So, $0.3$ is less than $0.4$.
So, $0.3 < 0.4$
(b) \[0.07\] or $0.02$
Ans: Since \[0.07\] and $0.02$ are having the same number of terms after the decimal point. So they are like decimals.
For comparison of decimals, use the direct approach of comparing the value of digits.
Since, $7>2$
So, \[0.07\] is greater than $0.02$
So, $0.07 > 0.02$
(c) $3$ or $0.8$
Ans: Convert $3$ to like decimal form to $0.8$. Since \[3.0\] and $0.8$ are having the same number of terms after the decimal point. So they are like decimals.
Since \[3.0\] is greater than $0.8$.
So, $3.0 > 0.8$
(d) $0.5$ or $0.05$
Ans: Convert $0.5$ to like decimal form to $0.05$. Now \[0.50\] and $0.05$ are having the same number of terms after the decimal point. So they are like decimals.
Since \[0.50\] is greater than $0.05$.
So, $0.50 > 0.05$
(e) $1.23$ or $1.2$
Ans: Convert $1.2$ to like decimal form to $1.23$. Now \[1.23\] and $1.20$ are having the same number of terms after the decimal point. So they are like decimals.
Since $1.23$ is greater than $1.20$.
So, $1.23 > 1.20$
(f) $0.099$ or $0.190$
Ans: Since $0.099$ and $0.190$ are having the same number of terms after the decimal point. So they are like decimals.
For comparison of like decimals, use the direct approach of comparing the value of digits.
Since, $99<190$
So, $0.099$ is lesser than $0.190$.
$0.099 < 0.190$
(g) $1.5$ or $1.50$
Ans: Convert $1.5$ to like decimal form to $1.50$. Now \[1.50\] and $1.50$ are having the same number of terms after the decimal point. So they are like decimals.
Since $1.50$ is equal to $1.50$.
$1.50 = 1.50$
(h) $1.431$ or $1.490$
Ans: Since $1.431$ and $1.490$ are having the same number of terms after the decimal point. So they are like decimals.
For comparison of like decimals, use the direct approach of comparing the value of digits.
Since, $1431<1490$
So, $1.431$ is lesser than $1.490$.
$1.431 < 1.490$
(i) $3.3$ or $3.300$
Ans: Convert $3.3$ to like decimal form to $3.300$. Since \[3.300\] and $3.300$ are having the same number of terms after the decimal point. So they are like decimals.
Since $3.300$ is equal to $3.300$.
$3.300 = 3.300$
(j) $5.64$ or $5.603$
Ans: Convert $5.64$ to like decimal form to $5.603$. Since \[5.640\] and $5.603$ are having the same number of terms after the decimal point. So they are like decimals.
Since $5.640$ is greater than $5.603$.
$5.640 > 5.603$
2. Make five more examples and find the greater:
(a) \[1.8\] or \[1.82\]
Ans: Convert \[1.8\] to like decimal form to \[1.82\]. Since \[1.80\] and $1.82$ are having the same number of terms after the decimal point. So they are like decimals.
Since \[1.80\] is less than \[1.82\].
\[1.80 < 1.82\]
(b) \[1.0009\] or \[1.09\]
Ans: Convert \[1.09\] to like decimal form to \[1.0009\]. Since Now \[1.0009\] and $1.0900$ are having the same number of terms after the decimal point. So they are like decimals.
Since \[1.0009\] is less than \[1.0900\].
\[1.0009 < 1.0900\]
(c) \[10.01\] or \[100.1\]
Ans: Convert \[100.1\] to like decimal form to \[10.01\]. Now, \[10.01\] and $100.10$ are having the same number of terms after the decimal point. So they are like decimals.
Since \[10.01\] is less than \[100.10\].
\[10.01 < 100.10\]
(d) \[5.100\] or \[5.0100{\text{ }}\]
Ans: Convert \[5.100\] to like decimal form to \[5.0100{\text{ }}\].
Since \[5.1000\] is greater than \[5.0100{\text{ }}\].
\[5.1000 > 5.0100{\text{ }}\]
(e) \[04.213\] or \[0421.3\]
Ans: Convert \[0421.3\] to like decimal form to \[04.213\]. Now, \[04.213\] and $0421.300$ are having the same number of terms after the decimal point. So they are like decimals.
Since \[0421.300\] is less than \[04.213\].
\[04.213 < 0421.300\]
