Summary of the Hack Driver

The story tells us of a young man, who was a lawyer. There was once a lawyer who, after graduating from law school, went to work at a well-known firm in the town. He was employed there as an assistant clerk. He disliked issuing summons since he had to deal with stressful situations on occasion.

He had to serve Oliver Lutkins with a summons one day. He was a resident of New Mullion, a small settlement. He travelled to a village that appeared to be desolate and deserted. The lawyer noticed a smiling hack driver on a platform.

They went to Fritz's store and then to Gustaff's barbershop. Later, when they couldn't find Gustaff at his house, they left after purchasing cigars. Bill asked the lawyer to get meals from his wife in the afternoon because it would be less expensive than going to a restaurant. They ate lunch went Wade's Hill, which is a lovely spot.

By this time, the lawyer was confident that Bill is indeed a kind and compassionate individual.

They drove to Lutkins' mother's place later, but she was a terrible woman who was on the verge of hitting them with an iron rod. 

Finally, the lawyer departed without having served the summons to Lutkins. 

The next day, his Chief chastised him severely and he was sent back to New Mullion with a colleague who knew Lutkins. When the lawyer arrived at the station, he expressed his gratitude to Bill for his assistance in the search for Lutkins. 

His colleague informed him at this point that the hack driver was none other than Oliver Lutkins. The lawyer was embarrassed by his actions.
