Introduction

Syed Hyder Raza was born in the Babariya village in Madhya Pradesh in 1922 and passed away in 2016. He had learned the art of painting from Nagpur school of art and then from J.J. School of Arts in Mumbai. He had conducted many exhibitions in India and then in 1950, he went to France on a scholarship to continue his studies. His name appears in the front row of artists who gave modern Indian painting a new meaning. He is in a similar league as M. F. Hussain and Sooja who are pioneers in making India proud at an international level in the field of painting.

Raza made Paris his home, that is why one can see a mix of Indian and Western effects in his artworks. Raza’s personality and art both are sublime. There is a maturity of colours and depth of spirituality in his work. He has been acknowledged for his works in India and abroad alike. 

The excerpt presented here is a piece of writing from his autobiography “Aatma ka taap” (The fire of soul). It was written in English and has been translated into Hindi by Madhu B. Joshi. In this section, Mr. Raza talks about his initial struggle and experience in the field of painting. The passion of an artist, the turmoil, and the urge in his heart for the struggle to excel in his art. All of this is portrayed in this chapter in an interesting, simple, and spontaneous style.

Aatma Ka Taap

S. H. Raza was always good in academics and stood first in his exams in Nagpur. After his father retired, he started looking for a job. He was teaching drawing at Gondia when he got a scholarship to study at the J. J. School of Arts in Mumbai. However, due to some delay, he could not get admission, and his scholarship was cancelled. But he did not come back and decided to pursue his studies in Mumbai itself as he liked the Mumbai environment and lifestyle.

He got the job of a designer at Express Job Studio. He used to work from 10 in the morning till 6 in the evening and he used to sleep at a taxi driver’s place who was also a friend of his. At his place, he would be awake till 12 in the night making sketches of streets and other things around him. His hard work received acknowledgment in the form of a gold medal from the Mumbai Art society. He was the youngest artist to acquire this award. 

Two years after receiving this award, he got a scholarship from the French government. Before that two of his paintings were exhibited in the exhibition of the Arts Society of India in November 1943. Both the paintings were sold for 40 rupees each at that time. A professor at Venice Academy, Langhamer, started buying his paintings which made it easy for him to keep pursuing his Art studies. In 1947, he became a regular student at J. J. School of Arts.

In 1947, his mother expired, and then in 1948, his father passed away too. After these incidents, he was laden with family responsibilities. At the young age of 25, he had experienced such tragedies in life. However, he worked at his full capacity and fulfilled his responsibilities in the best possible manner.

In 1948 while he was visiting Srinagar, he met famous French photographer Henry Cartier Bresson who taught him the real meaning of what painting stands for. Raza had a special interest in the French style of painting; hence he decided to go to Paris. After getting a scholarship for 2 years from the French government, he reached Marsais on 2nd October 1950. That was the beginning of S. H. Raza’s life as an artist. He touched the epitome of success after a lot of struggles in life.
