Importance of Chapter 2 Class 10 Chemistry Chemical Bonding

Chemical Bonding and Its Molecular Structures is one of the most important chapters in the branch of Chemistry. As it is the link to many upcoming chapters in your higher Classes. This is Chapter 2 of ICSE Class 10 Chemistry in the SELINA Book.


What is bonding in general? It means something bound together. Similarly, chemical bonding means when various forces hold the atoms, ions, molecules together and help in stabilizing them. The scientists who were successful in explaining the formation of chemical bonds were Gilbert Lewis and Kossel. Each of them gave their own theories and there are different explanations for each of them because of their different approach.

These bonds are formed when there is a loss, gain or sharing of electrons between two atoms. We see different Bond Parameters i.e Bond Enthalpy, Bond Order, Bond Length, Bond Angle.


An extremely important topic that students learn in this chapter is Resonance in Chemical Bonding which means rotation. Structures that show resonance are known as resonating structures or canonical structures.

2. What are the forces that bind the atom together?

There are many types of forces. But nuclear forces are responsible for holding the atoms together as they are the strongest attractive force to exist and bind molecules together. Other forces exist in nature which is, London dispersion forces which is the weakest intermolecular force, Van der Waals force, Covalent bonds, Ionic Bonds, Metallic Bond, etc.

 

When there is a transfer of one or more electrons between a metallic electropositive element to a non-metallic electronegative element, a chemical bond is formed which is called the electrovalent bond. This can only occur when the atom, which has to change into a cation, has 1, 2, or 3 valence electrons. To become a cation that is a positive ion, it has to undergo a loss of electrons.

3. How do I cover my chemistry syllabus along with learning it properly?

First of all, make a to-do list for a week, a month, or the duration until your syllabus gets completed. Now that you have set your goal, work hard to achieve it. Make revision notes/ short notes, these will prove to be the most helpful in the long run.
