What Is The Importance Of A Prime Minister In India?

The Prime Minister of India is ranked the second-highest official in the Indian governing hierarchy and is also, therefore, referred to as the chief executive of the government of India. Though the President of India is considered as the head of the country, in reality, the existing powers in exercise are executed by the Prime Minister of India along with the council ministers of Parliament. The Prime Minister of India who is appointed and swore-in by the President is the leader of the party or its alliance who acquired the maximum number of seats in the lower house of the parliament.

Post the independence of India, it has seen 14 Prime Ministers and 15th including Guzarilal Nanda, who acted as an emergency Prime Minister for a very short duration. Out of the 14 Prime Ministers, 6 of them have held the post of Prime Minister for one full term and some even more in the 60 years of independent ruling of the country since 1947. Jawaharlal Lal Nehru was the first Prime Minister appointed in the year 1947 by free India and took the oath on 15th August 1947, the day when India got its Independence from British Ruling. He served as the longest Prime Minister of India for 16 years and 286 days until his demise in the year 1964 in May.

He was followed by Lal Bahadur Sastri, who became the second Prime Minister of India and served the country for one year and seven months before he died. With that, Indira Gandhi, who was the daughter of Nehru, became the first female Prime Minister in the year 1966 and was in power for 11 years. But later, she was voted out by the power that went in favour of the Janata Party. And with this, Morarji Desai became the first Prime Minister of India who did not belong to the Congress party. After the resignation of Moraji Desai in the year 1979, Charan Singh, who was the appointed former deputy, held on to the seat for a brief period until Indira Gandhi again came in power and ran the country for the next five years. Finally, on 31st October 1984, she was assassinated by her bodyguards. Following her demise, her son, Rajiv Gandhi, became the youngest Prime Minister of India. That is how the Congress party and the Nehru Gandhi family have served as Prime Minister for a total duration of 37 years and 303 days.
