History of KFC

Kentucky Fried Chicken, which is the popularly known KFC full name, was first founded by an entrepreneur, Colonel Harland Sanders during the 1930s. Sander began selling this fried chicken during the Great Depression period at his roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky. He later opened his first franchise in Utah in 1992, after identifying the franchising concept and potential of the restaurant. KFC gained much popularity in the fast food industry with its idea of Kentucky Fried Chicken and thereafter also challenged the dominance of the hamburger.

KFC was the first American fast-food restaurant chain that gained popularity globally and by the mid-1960s its outlets expanded internationally in Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico and Jamaica.

Colonel Harland Sander became a prominent and popular figure in the history of America and to date, his image remains widely used in KFC advertising. The company’s growing popularity, however, overwhelmed Sander and he decided to sell it to a group of investors in 1964. This group was led by John Y. Brown Jr. and Jack C. Massey. The company had to go through a lot of changes in its ownership structure and experienced a mixed fortune domestically in the 1970s and 1980s until it was taken over by PepsiCo in the year 1987.

The chain gradually started expanding overseas under the name of KFC. In the year 1897, KFC became the first Western restaurant chain to open its branch in China, which is to date the single largest market of the company. In the year 1997, the ownership of this company was taken over by Yum! Brands, adding more recipes to the menu.

KFC Food Promises and Slogans

The full form of KFC Chicken i.e., Kentucky Fried Chicken is derived from its popular and age-old recipe of pressure fried chicken pieces. These KFC chickens also use Sander’s trade secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices. KFC has continued to serve larger portions of fried chicken in a cardboard bucket since 1957 after it was introduced by franchisee Pete Harman. Today, this thing has become a popular feature of the KFC chain.

Since the early 1990s, KFC has also expanded and included several other chicken products in its menus such as chicken fillet sandwiches, wraps, salads, french fries, coleslaw, desserts and soft drinks. Apart from this, KFC also prioritizes the following factors:

  • The chicken before getting delivered to the KFC kitchens undergo USDA inspection for quality check.

  • It makes sure that the chicken used is free from steroids and added hormones.

  • More than 90% of the KFC food menu and chicken products (excluding third party products) are free of food dyes.
