What is Propan 2 ol Formula?

The chemical formula for propan 2 ol is the C\[_{3}\]H\[_{8}\]O. Propan 2 ol is a colourless flammable liquid, They have a disinfectant property so they are widely used as antiseptic. Propan 2 ol has an isomer property of 1-propanal. The Propan 2 ol are widely used in manufacturing medicines, dye solutions, window cleaners, cosmetics, lacquer formulations, anti-freezes, and soaps. Further, about 70% of the propan 2 ol are sold in an aqueous state as rubbing alcohol. Propan 2 Ol (C\[_{3}\]H\[_{8}\]O) can convert into viscous solution when decreasing the temperature of propan 2 ol and freezes at  −89 °C.

Structure of Propan 2 ol

The structure of propan 2 ol is formed by combining an isopropyl group with a hydroxyl group. Isopropyl alcohol is the best example of secondary alcohol. As the carbon atom with alcohol is attached to two other carbon atoms. The structure of propan 2 ol is an isomer of 1 propanol and ethyl methyl ether.

The molecular weight of isopropyl alcohol is about 60.096 g mol\[^{-1}\]. The density of this aqueous solution is about 0.786 g/cm\[^{3}\] (20 \[^{0}\]C). Further, the boiling point of isopropyl alcohol is 82.6 \[^{0}\]C and the melting point is about −89 \[^{0}\]C

FAQs on Propan 2 ol Formula

Q1. What Type of Alcohol is Propan-2-ol?

Ans: Propan 2 ol is also known as Isopropyl alcohol. The propan 2 ol is a flammable, colourless, clear liquid with a slightly pleasant alcoholic odour. The physical and chemical properties of the propan 2 ol are similar to that of ethyl alcohol. Further, the propan 2 ol is completely soluble in the water and they are the most organic solvents.

Q2. What is 2 Propanol Used for?

Ans: Isopropyl alcohol or 2 methyl propan 2 ol structure is widely used in manufacturing paints, paint removers, paint thinners, inks, fuels, coating, cement, dyes, disinfectants and deicers. They are used during the production of acetones, waxes, vegetable and animal oils and flavouring agents.

Q3. Why is Propan-2-ol a Secondary Alcohol?

Ans: The propan 2 ol structure contains –OH group, which are attached to the middle carbon atom. So, the  propan-2-ol is classed as secondary alcohol. As the propan 2 ol is the secondary alcohol, they are usually more reactive, more stable and less acidic than the propan 1 ol. When the propan 2 ol is undergoing an oxidation reaction, the ketones are formed instead of aldehydes.
