Introduction to The Sword in The Stone Story

The story The sword in the stone is a tale that tells us no matter how long the dark nights are but the light will always shine through and make everything bright and beautiful. This story revolves around Arthur who has a big heart as strong as stone and who always obeyed and helped others around him without knowing he belonged to a kingdom and was meant for bigger things in life.


Through Arthur the author narrated how every magic, power or money fades away with time but the one who has a big and kind heart will always live long and influence people around him to do better in life. Moreover, reading the sword in the stone story kids will learn how God and the universe always help people who have a pure heart.

The Origin of the Sword in the Stone

There are many versions of Arthur sword in the stone story but the origin of this tale goes back to 1485 CE. In 1136 CE the sword was introduced in History of the KIngs of Britain by Geoffrey Of Monmouth’s; later sir Thomas Malory published his iconic work called Morte D’Arthur in which he described about the excalibur the sword of the king Arthur.


Since 1485 many writers have used the reference of the sword and king Arthur in their stories in multiple different interpretations. There are many tales around the king Arthur who was known as the legend of the sword. Though according to Greek mythology the concept of the sword was way more ancient because the word excalibur (sword) is frequently associated with the king Arthur in the sword in the stone but there were two different swords.

The Sword in the Stone Summary in English 

The sword in the stone story starts when king Uther and his wife Guinevere had a baby boy. Up until the birth of this little boy everything was good, king Uther ruled the land in England and all were living a happy life. The king  also hired a magician named Merlin at his court who has the ability to see the future. Soon after the birth of the baby boy, Merlin sword in the stone warned king Uther that a huge darkness will soon be consuming the kingdom and his child’s life is in danger. Merlin requested the king to take the baby away somewhere safe but the king refused as the little boy was his only child.


In the aftermath of the king's refusal to give away the boy, queen Guinevere and king Uther both died. After their death Merlin took the baby and left the kingdom. Soon the darkness was all over the place. There was no king to rule the kingdom, no one was there to make or enforce the law, everyone was fighting to become the next king, people were getting robbed in the broad daylight. England was in a huge crisis.


In the midst of these unfortunate events in England, a knight named Sir Ector lived with his two sons Kay and Arthur in a town away from all this. Arthur was the boy Sir Ector adopted from a stranger and raised him with love and patience. That stranger was Merlin, he came to this town and gave Arthur to Sir Ector and after 10 years he again came back to meet Arthur and  teach him things about life. Merlin soon realized Arthur has a big and powerful heart, similar to a stone that holds the power to influence people. Some days later, Arthur and Merlin were bonding when out of nowhere a white stone appeared with a sword inside. The sword had a message on it “Whoever pulls out this sword from this stone is the true king of England!” and unknowingly with the turns of events Arthur pulls out the sword from the stone which no one else could. And that is how he became the king Arthur sword in the stone. As a result of this incident, everything in England returned to normal and people lived a happy life under the new king's rule.

The story of King Arthur teaches all of us that if your actions are right and you have the right intentions, evil and dark powers can not stop you from bringing the light back. You just have to believe in yourself and help others along the way. This story perfectly illustrates, we are all special in our own way, even if we are unaware of it.
