The Black Fairies Stories

Anabelle, the nine-year-old daughter of a lawyer and the prettiest child in the village, sat with a volume of Grimm in front of her. She had an intellect higher than her peers. Whatever Anabelle pictured vividly would come to life. One afternoon, she sat wondering if black fairies existed. Anabelle had never read any black fairies stories. Every fairy she saw was white, and never any black fairies images.

She put the book down and looked upon a landscape to witness something mystical. The cornfield seemed to sway and dance when she saw what she could swear to be an Indian fairy. The fairies black body looked beautiful and regal. Her wings, which resembled beetles' wings, made music when stirred by the wind. She was amazed to see the fairies black body.

The fairy had a sweet and soft voice which she used to introduce herself to Anabelle. She said her name was Amunophis, and she was the Lily of Ethiopia. She wore beautiful golden heels and a crown of lotus leaves. When Anabelle asked her if she was a fairy, she confirmed and told her that she had lived for five thousand years in Ethiopia.

Amunophis proceeded to tell her about the brilliant and glorious past of Ethiopia before the barbarians from the North took over and introduced slavery to their civilization. They sold the Ethiopians to the people of Egypt. The beautiful past got shredded to bits and began a dark chapter in the fate of the Ethiopians.

The fairy asked Anabelle to follow her. She held her hand and made her wish that she was in the wood behind the cornfield. Before Anabelle opened her eyes, she knew they were seated by a waterbody. The fairy asked Anabelle to open her eyes and see the water, which was beautiful. However, it was not as beautiful as it used to be. The water-cooled down the Whites, who blossomed and trampled over the bloomed Ethiopians.

The fairy made her look at a few pictures in the river's water. The first picture that Anabelle saw spoke of the prosperous lives of the Ethiopians, with a brilliant crimson hue illuminating every corner, suggestive of the happy lives of the people of Ethiopia. Then, roaring Persians came and massacred women and children. They introduced slavery which got worse with the advent of Mohammedans.

The next picture showed Anabelle the plight of Ethiopians who fled from slavery to form a nucleus of three tribes, which then took shelter in houses built to protect them from heat. There the minstrels among them would sing hymns dedicated to nature that they worshipped. Anabelle, though, could not understand the language but was moved by the infectious sorrow in their voice and melodies.

The East showed the warriors who brought more prisoners to be sold as slaves to the Whites from the West. Amunophis said to Anabelle, pointing at the picture where a light, airy creature resembling an ancient goddess guided the craft. She said she brought Anabelle's ancestors to America, hoping they would someday lead a new civilization where every race lived and thrived.

Having said that, the fairy bids goodbye to Anabelle, saying that there is one more picture left to be seen by Anabelle. Listening to her saying goodbye, Anabelle teared up and requested that she show her the last picture. Greatly troubled with the thought of parting, she asked about the fairy's return. Upon hearing Anabelle, the fairy said she would return when men would learn brotherhood.

She said when there would be no black-and-white civilization, everyone would live in harmony with everyone else and treat each other with the same respect; without any prejudices, she would return. She described a place where all children of every race and colour would play with each other and be joined by black and white fairies. Then, the black and white fairies, everyone shall join them and perform magic tricks. And then, Anabelle would see the last and the best picture.

Saying so, she disappeared, and Anabelle was left spellbound.

Moral of the Story

The moral of the above-mentioned story is: “One should never judge someone based on their skin colour.”

Summary

This story talks about a black fairy who shows the persecution of the Ethiopian because of their skin-colour. This is a good read for those parents who want their children to become  better people before anything. They can read this story to their children to make them realise that skin colour can never be the reason for someone's superiority. It is a man-made prejudice, a vile one. One can only live peacefully if they have love in their heart.
