RMO Counselling Procedure

Unlike other competitive Examinations, there is no specific counselling procedure for the Regional Maths Olympiad. Based on their performance in RMO, (approximately 900) qualify for the third stage – the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO). The INMO is held on the third Sunday of January at 28 centres across the country.

Apart from the above-mentioned general selection during RMO counselling, five girl students will also be chosen from Class 8 to 11 at this stage. Furthermore, Previous Years INMO Awardees are also eligible to participate in this round.

The school administration itself will notify students who participated on behalf of a particular school if they qualify for the next stage and guide them through RMO counselling. Individual students can easily check their results and merit list online.

How to Check the RMO Score?

Students participating in RMO counselling can check their RMO score by following the steps below:

  1. Visit the official website of Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education.

  2. Select the tab for the recent Olympiad cycle, which can be found on the upper section of the webpage.

  3. Under this tab, scroll down to the RMO section to find the result link and then click on it. Once you click on this link, a new window will open.

  4. Candidates need to log in using their Date of Birth and roll number to see their final score.

Students from KV and JNV schools cannot check their scores through this process. To know their RMO score and take part in RMO counselling, they need to get in touch with their school administration.

How to Check RMO Merit List?

Candidates participating in RMO counselling will find a link to the RMO merit list in the same section. They can use this link to see if they have qualified for the Indian National Mathematics Olympiad. Students who pass for RMO are eligible to move on to the next stage, i.e. Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO).

What Happens in the Case of a Tie?

If there is a tie during RMO counselling, the regional coordinator will use the candidates' Pre RMO (Pre-Regional Mathematical Olympiad) scores to make a final decision. However, if the tie remains after applying Pre RMO scores, the final merit list will include the names of all candidates whose scores were in a tie.

INMO Counselling Procedure

Apart from RMO counselling, students should have a good understanding of the Indian National Mathematics Olympiad. That is the next step after RMO. It is the most important step in the entire Olympiad selection process. Brilliant students across India compete for a chance to represent India at the International Olympiad. As a result, the test's difficulty level is significantly high.

Only the top 30 students from Grades 8 through 11 and six students from grades 12 are chosen to participate in the final round. They are recognised as INMO Awardees, so they are qualified to attend the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education in Mumbai for the International Maths Olympiad training camp. In addition, five female students will be chosen from the INMO merit list as part of the girls' quota.

RMO or Regional Mathematics Olympiad is an exam that has various other exams that precede it once the students qualify for this exam. INMO also called the Indian National Mathematics Olympiad is the next level exam after the RMO exam, in which about 600 students appear each year. It is from these 600 students that about 35 are selected for the one-month training camp which is held in Mumbai. After the month-long training, 6 students from a total of 35 are sent to the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) which is one of the most prestigious exams. The champions of IMO are then rewarded for their excellence in Maths.

FAQs on RMO Counselling

1. What is the First Stage in the Olympiad Selection Procedure?

Ans: The first stage in the Olympiad selection procedure in the Pre-regional Mathematics Olympiad conducted by the Mathematical Teachers Association of India (MTA). Students who are Indian citizens and are currently studying in Class 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 are eligible to enrol for this test. Furthermore, they should be born on or after August 1, 2000. Pre RMO is a three-hour test, and the question paper is set by the MTA.

The Pre RMO question paper contains 30 objective type questions. Numbers 1-6 are of 2 marks each whereas 7-21 carry three marks. Questions 22-30 have five marks each. Candidates need to cross the minimum threshold to clear the first stage of Olympiad selection.

2. What is the RMO Exam Pattern?

Ans: Besides RMO counselling, students should also know about the exam pattern. Regional Maths Olympiad is a three-hour, pen and paper test. Regional coordinators who oversee a specific region can set their question paper or obtain the paper set by the National Board for Higher Mathematics. The question paper will contain six descriptive type questions of 17 marks each.

Candidates will be given marks according to how accurate their answers were. Furthermore, step marking will be awarded in case of partially correct or incomplete answers. The syllabus for RMO is based on pre-college level mathematics. Some common topics covered are combinatorics, geometry, quadratic equations and expressions, permutation and combinations etc.

3. What are the outcomes from the RMO Exam?

Ans: RMO exam is a type of exam where students try to accomplish some great feats and awards and this aspires each of them to enter the IMO also called the International Maths Olympiad. Those students who have a particular love for Maths should try out this competitive exam. Furthermore, the students who qualify for the IMO also have special considerations at some of the best universities and programs in the world. Apart from these gains what a student gets during the preparations are as follows:

  2. Some of the areas of Maths include: Algebra, Geometry, Number Theory, and Combinatorics.

  3. The topic involved under the specified areas are number systems, the arithmetic of integers, factorisation of polynomials, permutations and combinations, inequalities, probability theory, elementary combinatorics, number theory, infinite series, coordinate geometry.

  4. The difficulty of these topics keeps on increasing from RMO to INMO and then finally by IO it becomes quite competitive to keep up.

  5. The syllabus even though is roughly from Class 9th to Class 12th they are more complicated than the mere textbook sample questions.
