The National Standard Examination in Astronomy or NSEA is a competitive examination conducted for the students of class 11 and 12 studying in any of the Indian schools or colleges. The students must be the citizens of India to be eligible for this examination. The governing body and organizing authority of the NSEA exam is the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT). The exam is usually conducted in the month of November every year to motivate aspiring and talented students to enhance their learning opportunities in the field of Astronomy. Students may consider the NSEA exam as an entry-level test for various other stages of exams in the Astronomy sector.

Q1. Who is Eligible to Take the NSEA Exam?

Ans: To select and streamline the aspiring and talented students in the field of Astronomy, the NSEA is conducted as a national level Astronomy Olympiad Program. This is the first stage of selection. However, the students who qualify in this stage can move forward to the higher levels. The students who are studying their class 11 or 12 in any of the Indian Schools or Colleges and are the citizens of India are eligible to register for this examination. The students will be liable to legal actions if they were found to be not eligible for taking up the exam.

Ans: The NSEA exam syllabus is the same as that of the NCERT textbooks. However, the level of questions in the examination and the marking scheme is not the same. The question paper covers a major portion of Physics and Mathematics. A few questions are dedicated to the concepts of elementary astronomy. The important concepts to be mastered in elementary astronomy are orbital and escape velocity, gravitational laws, and Kepler’s laws.
