Class 9 English Beehive Chapter 2 - The Sound of Music - Summary

The Sound of Music divides into two parts. Each part focuses on two musicians, Evelyn Glennie and Bismillah Khan. Part one throws light on Evelyn’s life and struggles to become a successful musician. Students will learn that she is a multi-percussionist. She has the talent to play hundreds of instruments perfectly. It tells how she gained international recognition.


What is more motivational about this story is that Evelyn Glennie, who is a famous musician today, is profoundly deaf. She developed her ability to understand music using her body rather than her ears. She feels the music rather than hearing it. You will learn that she was 11 years old when she discovered she had hearing problems. Nonetheless, this did not discourage her from pursuing a career in music. Ron Forbes, her teacher, was the first to notice her potential. He opened doors to her potential and assisted her in accomplishing the seemingly unattainable. She is now one of the most well-known musicians in the world. She has received numerous honours and awards and is a huge inspiration to the disabled community.


In the second part of the chapter The Sound of Music, we get to know about Bismillah Khan, the master of Shehnai. He tuned two drums into two different notes and she indeed could feel the higher drum from her waist up and the lower tuned drum from her waist down. 

Similarly, she played the xylophone. She could feel the vibration of the music from the stick into her fingertips. While performing on a wooden platform she removed her shoes to feel the vibrations from her feet, up her legs, and poured each cell of her into the music. It tingled her and the sensation helped her develop a deeper bond with music.
