Class 7 Main Points of all the Chapters

Chapter 1 - Integers

The number line is where you can represent all the real numbers. When you want to add a positive integer, you move to the right and when you want to add a negative number, you move to the left. When you subtract a positive integer, you move to the left and when you subtract a negative number, you move to the right. Through this chapter, you will be able to learn how you can use these facts in your daily life.

Chapter 2 - Fractions and Decimals

Chapter 2 of Class 7 Maths covers decimals and fractions along with addition and subtraction operations on them. You will learn multiplication of decimal numbers where you have to multiply them as whole numbers, then count how many digits are there to the decimal point’s right in both decimal numbers, add both the counted digits, and put the decimal point by counting the digits from the rightmost digit in the product. It is important to note that the count should include the digits from both numbers. Apart from this, you will also be learning how to multiply and divide decimal numbers and fractions. There are methods for multiplying the fractions by multiplying the numerators and denominators separately. It also covers obtaining a fraction’s reciprocal by inverting it upside down. This is an important concept that will be used in the Simple Equations Chapter as well.

Chapter 3 - Data Handling

This chapter deals with collecting, recording, and presenting data. Before the data is collected, it is important to know whether the collected data will have to be organized in a table to make it easy to understand and interpret. In this chapter, you will be learning about average, a number showing or representing the central tendency of observations or the data along with the mean. Other concepts discussed in this chapter are Mode (another form of symbolic value or central tendency), Median (a form of symbolic value that refers to the value lying in the middle of the data that has half observations below it and the other half above it). You will be using bar graphs and double bar graphs with bars of uniform widths for comparing collected data. There are questions on probability describing real-life situations that are certain to happen, some of them might or might not happen while some will be impossible.

Chapter 4 - Simple Equations

This chapter involves working on an equation with a condition on a variable like the two expressions should have equal value. It will also tell you about the variable’s value that satisfies the equation is known as the solution of the equation. It is a known fact that if the RHS and LHS of an equation are interchanged, the equation remains the same. You will have to use this property for solving the equation. A number transposition has the same effect as subtracting or adding the same number to the equation’s both sides. The chapter describes how you can create simple algebraic expressions that correspond to practical solutions. You will have to use the technique of performing mathematical operations on either side for building an equation that helps solve it.

Chapter 5 - Lines and Angles

A line segment is a line that has two endpoints. A ray is a type of line with only one endpoint. You must already have learned that a line has no endpoints. In this chapter, you will be learning about pairs of angles like complementary angles (angles adding up to 90°), supplementary angles (angles adding up to 180°), adjacent angles (angles sharing a common vertex), linear pair, vertically opposite angles (two pairs of opposite angles), etc. Two lines intersect at a meeting point known as the point of intersection and when lines don’t meet, however far they are produced, they are known to be parallel lines. You will also learn about transversal, a line intersecting more than one line at distinct points. These concepts will be used in the Triangles and its properties chapter.

Chapter 6 - The Triangles and its Properties

This chapter describes the elements of a triangle, the three sides and the three angles. You will also learn about the three altitudes and three medians of a triangle. You must know that a triangle’s exterior angle is created when one of the sides of a triangle is extended. So, there are two ways to form an exterior angle. You will have to learn that any triangle’s exterior angle's measure is the sum of its interior opposite angles and the triangle’s angle sum property states that in a triangle, the total measure of all the three angles is 180°. You will also learn about equilateral triangles(a triangle in which all the angles measure 60°), isosceles triangle(a triangle in which two sides are of the same length), and right triangle(a triangle in which one angle is 90°). You will be using the property of the triangle’s sides length for solving different problems quickly. This chapter will also introduce the Pythagoras theorem which will be used in further classes.

Chapter 7 - Congruence of Triangles

Congruent triangles are exact copies of each other. In this chapter, you will be learning about triangles’ congruence and their theorems. It explains how you can use the superposition theorem for examining the plane figure’s congruence. When it comes to the congruence of two triangles, there are four main rules you have to focus on - SSS, ASA, SAS, and RHS congruence rules. The S here denotes the side and A the angle of the triangle. Please note that there isn’t AAA congruence of triangles. This concept helps to solve geometrical questions in higher classes.

Chapter 8 - Comparing Quantities

Comparing quantities includes finding the relative ratio between quantities. You often compare two quantities in your daily life. This chapter will help you find such comparisons. These quantities can be weights, heights, marks, salaries, etc. To compare these ratios, you have to convert them to fractions. When the fractions are equal, the two ratios are equivalent as well which means that the four quantities are in proportion. You can compare quantities using percentages as well. Percentages are fraction’s numerators with 100 as the denominator. They are used widely in day-to-day use.

Chapter 9 - Rational Numbers

You must have learned about rational numbers in your previous class. A rational number is a type of number that can be expressed as p/q where q is not equal to zero and p and q are integers. A few examples of rational numbers are ½, 7/2, ⅖, etc. All fractions and integers are rational numbers. This chapter contains a lot of practice questions that will help you familiarize yourself with rational numbers. A positive rational number is a rational number that has positive integers as numerators and denominators. A negative rational number is a rational number that has either its numerator or denominator a negative number. The number 0 is not a positive or a negative rational number. In this chapter, you will also learn a rational number’s standard form, how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers by adjusting the numerator and denominator.

Chapter 10 - Practical Geometry

In this chapter, you will be looking at the different methods to construct figures that involve using compasses and rulers. Your concepts from the Congruence of Triangles Chapter will be used in this for drawing triangular figures. While you are constructing, whether a line is given and there isn’t any point on it, you will use the ‘equal alternate angles’ idea in a transversal diagram for drawing a parallel line. You can also use the ‘equal corresponding angles’ idea for the construction. For this chapter, your knowledge of congruence triangles’ properties like SSS, SAS, ASA, and RHS will also be used.

Chapter 11 - Perimeter and Area

This chapter covers the mensuration of 2-D figures. Area is the part of the plane that is occupied by a closed figure and perimeter is the distance around it. In this chapter, you will be calculating the perimeter of different objects from your daily life. For calculating the perimeter or area, you will be using different formulas like:

  • Perimeter of a rectangle = 2 × (length + breadth)

  • Area of a rectangle = length × breadth

  • Perimeter of a square = 4 × side

  • Area of a square = side × side

You will be using the conversion of units learned during your earlier classes. You can use units of areas like 1 hectare = 10000 square m, 1 square cm = 100 square mm, and 1 square m = 10000 square cm.

Chapter 12 - Algebraic Expressions

In this chapter, you will be learning how variables and constants are used to form algebraic expressions. It covers the usage of operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division on constants and variables for forming expressions. Any expression that has more than one term is known as a polynomial. Polynomials can be binomials, trinomials and so on. Terms that have the same algebraic factors are called like terms and terms with different algebraic factors are called, unlike terms.

Chapter 13 - Exponents and Powers

Vast numbers can be difficult to read, operate upon, understand, and compare. With exponents and powers, it becomes slightly easier. Exponents are used to converting large numbers to a shorter form. You should focus on this chapter as it will be used in your future classes well. Numbers that are in exponential form obey certain unique laws. Only with practice will you be able to understand these laws carefully.

Chapter 14 - Symmetry

A figure is known to have line symmetry if it can be folded along a line in a way that both parts coincide with each other. You know that regular polygons have equal angles and equal sides. This means that they have several lines of symmetry. Mirror reflection results in symmetry which means that you have to take care of left-right orientation. To obtain this, you will have to turn an object around a fixed point which is known as the centre of rotation. You can also find the angle or rotation, right turn or left turn. If the object looks exactly the same after the rotation, it must have rotational symmetry. This is an important concept as it is used in your daily life frequency and can provide you with beautiful designs.

Chapter 15 - Visualising Solid Shapes

A few examples of plane figures are the square, the rectangle, the circle, the triangle, and the quadrilateral. Similarly, a few examples of solid shapes are the cube, the sphere, the cuboid, the cone, the cylinder, and the pyramid. In this chapter, you will be learning about the sketches and shapes of these figures. A plane figure is considered to be 2D or two-dimensions and a solid figure is considered to be 3D or three-dimensions. The corners of solid shapes are known as vertices, their flat surfaces are called their faces, and their line segments are called edges.

Tips to Help You Study Better

  1. Give Yourself Enough Time

Make sure that you don’t leave your exam preparation until the last minute. There are some students who thrive on last-minute preparation, but it is a widely accepted fact that this isn’t the right way to approach your exam. You need to set a timetable to sort out your time management. Write down the days you need to prepare for the exam and organize accordingly. You might have to allot more time to some concepts to find the right balance.

  1. Organize Your Space

Before you start studying, make sure that you have space for spreading your notes and textbooks out. You should have enough light, comfortable sight, and computer games out of sight. Get rid of all the distractions so that you are comfortable and focused on your studies.

  1. Use Diagrams and Flowcharts

When you are studying or revising, visual aids can be very helpful. When you are starting a topic, write down everything that you know about the topic and highlight the gaps. As you get closer to the exam, you should condense your notes into a one-page diagram. This way, you will have a brief format that you can use to recall everything during the exam.

  1. Practice Using Old Question Papers

One of the best ways to prepare effectively for an exam is to practice using old question papers. It will help you understand the format of the questions. Also, it is a good way to ensure that you are able to finish your exam in time.

  1. Explain to Others

You can ask your parents and siblings to help you with your preparation. You can make them sit down and explain an answer to them. This will not only help you get a clear idea of the concept but also highlight the areas where you have to focus more.

  1. Make a Study Group with Your Friends

Invite your friends over for a study session. They might have the answers to some of your questions and vice versa. However, you have to be careful as it can be distracting. You have to stay focused on studying for the duration. It can be an effective way of challenging yourself.

  1. Take Breaks Regularly

Studying for as long as you can is not the best way to study. In fact, it can be counterproductive. For example, if you are training for a marathon, you won’t be running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Studies have shown that taking regular breaks help in the long-term retention of knowledge.

  1. Eat Well

You might feel that after studying for so long, you deserve a treat. But, the truth is that what you eat has an impact on your ability to focus and energy levels. You have to eat nutritious food as it keeps your brain and body well-fuelled and aids with memory and concentration. This includes nuts, fish, yogurt, seeds, and blueberries. The same goes for the day of your exam. Before the test, you should eat a good meal.

  1. Plan the Day of Your Exam

Make sure that you have everything ready in advance. Don’t leave it until the day of the exam to realize that you don’t know what you are supposed to bring or that you need to buy supplies. Read all the requirements.

  1. Drink a Lot of Water

If you want your brain to work to its full capability, you have to stay well-hydrated. Make sure that throughout the revision and on the day of the exam, you drink plenty of water.
