Introduction to Class 6 English Chapter 2 - The Friendly Mongoose

Chapter 2 - The Friendly Mongoose is a part of Class 6 English Supplementary Book, ‘A Pact with the Sun.’ The Friendly Mongoose’s protagonist, as the name suggests, is a Mongoose, which is an unusual pet of a farmer and his wife.

The story began with a farmer and his wife getting a pet baby Mongoose as a companion for their little son. In five to six months, the Mongoose grew and was no longer a baby, while the farmer’s son was still a baby who slept in the cradle.

One day, the farmer’s wife went to the market and asked her husband to look after their son and reminded him to not leave their child alone with the mongoose. However, the farmer soon left to meet his friends and the wife returned home to find the mongoose soaked in blood. She assumed that it had killed their son, and the furious lady threw a basket at her pet.

When she went inside she saw her child completely fine playing in the cradle. She soon realised that the mongoose was just trying to protect her son from a snake. When she went back to see the mongoose, it had already died. The farmer’s wife regretted her action.

Thus, the mongoose was truly a ‘Friendly Mongoose.’ The Class 6 English A pact with the Sun Chapter-2 teaches us that one should not jump to conclusions and should not take any decisions when in anger.
