What are Pollination And Fertilization?

Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma (Pollen towards pistil) that allows fertilization and ultimately the formation of seeds. Fertilization is the fusion of gametes that produces a new organism that has distinct and inheritable traits from its parents. In flowering plants, either the pollen is moved by insects or wind, or it just falls from the anther to the stigma. The sperm then swims toward the egg through a tube called a micropyle.

Pollination Can Be Achieved By:

Self-pollination – When flower produces pollen and transfers it directly to its own stigmas External Pollination – Through insects or wind

Pollination can be done by Burying beetles which are attracted to the scent of rotting flesh. These beetles dig six-inch-long vertical tunnels in which larvae feed on carrion and plant material. The plant's seed is stored in these tunnels!

Fertilization is important for flowering plants like apple, litchi, avocado, orange etc.

Fertilization:

Fertilization is an essential part of the life cycle of every human being because when egg and sperm meet, new life is created. The baby's body contains cells with half the chromosomes of each parent. When fertilization occurs, the mother's egg cell combines with the father's sperm cell to form a complete set of chromosomes. Thus the fertilized egg cell has 46 chromosomes (23 from mother + 23 from father). Fertilization is a fusion of male gamete (sperm) and female gamete (ovum), resulting in fertilization.

How do plants reproduce?

Many flowering plants rely on animal pollinators, which are attracted to the scent of flowers and can both collect and deliver pollen. Without pollinators, these plants might go extinct as they would not be able to produce offspring.
