Introduction to the Chapter

Tissues are groups of similar cells, which perform specific functions. All basic units of life are classified as either cell, or one cell group called a colony.

Types of Tissues: There are four types of tissues in plants and animals, depending on the function they perform. They are

(i) Epithelial tissues

(ii) Connective tissues

(iii) Muscular tissues

(iv) Nervous tissues.

What are the functions of epithelium tissue?

One of the important functions of epithelium is to act as lining, protective and covering layer on all internal and external surfaces of the body, e.g. skin, lining of the internal cavity. Epithelial tissues are classified into three types-

Ciliated Epithelium - Cilia are small hair-like projections present on the surface of ciliated epithelium cells. They function for propulsion (movement) of fluids when they beat in unison.

Non-Ciliated Epithelium - They are used in the respiratory system, alimentary canal and glands.

Glandular Epithelium - They secrete substances like mucus, saliva, milk etc.

What are the functions of connective tissues?

Connective tissues provide mechanical strength to the body, i.e. they support the body organs, e.g. bones, cartilage, ligaments (connect bone to bones), tendons (connect muscles to bones). They also protect internal organs like the lining of the heart.

Connective tissues are classified into two types-

(i) Lose Connective Tissue - It is made up of collagenous and elastic fibres, e.g. areolar tissue (the connective tissue surrounding organs). Collagenous fibres provide strength to the tissue, and elastic fibres help in the stretching of the skin.

(ii) Dense Connective Tissues - It provides mechanical strength to the body, e.g. tendons (connect bones with muscles), ligaments (connect bones with bones), bone marrow etc.

3. Name the two major tissue types found in plants and animals.

Two major tissue types are found in plants are xylem and phloem, while two main tissue types are found in animals are epithelium and connective tissues. The epithelium consists of cells that are joined together, whereas connective tissues differ from the epithelium in terms of their functions and characteristics. Students should try to understand the difference between the two tissues so that they can start solving questions related to either of them. Our provided solutions for Selina Concise Class 9 Biology for Chapter 3 Tissues: Plant and Animal Tissues will help you in this regard.

4. What are the functions of connective tissues in animals?

Connective tissues have various functions in the body. Some of their main functions are mentioned below:

• The cells of connective tissues play a major role in absorption and secretion.

• They are involved in transporting substances from one part of the body to another.

• They are also responsible for providing support to the body, containing blood and lymph, protecting body organs and regulating movement.

• They help to maintain the shape of the body by holding its different parts together.

• The connective tissues also produce bony tissue in an embryo. This bony tissue is turned into cartilaginous or bone tissue after it develops.

5. What are the examples of parenchyma cells in plants and animals?

Parenchyma is present in both plants and animals, but their functions are different in plants and animals. In plants, these cells perform mainly photosynthetic functions. In animals, they serve as storage tissues and help in the secretion of body fluids.
