ICSE Class 10 Physics Chapter 7 is on the topic SOUND

Sound is a type of energy which is produced from vibrations and reaches our ears. In this chapter, students will learn about the different types of waves in sound, different phenomenons of sound, sound waves and more.

Some topics that we will learn about in Sound are:

  1. Reflection of Sound waves

  2. Echo

  3. Reverberation

  4. Types of waves

  5. Resonance

  6. Characteristics of  sound

In the following details, we will explain the above in short notes. Students can use these as revision notes as well.

  1. Reflection of sound waves - When sound strikes on a rigid surface like a wall,  it bounces back. This is defined as reflection of sound waves.

  2. Echo - The sound heard after reflection from a distant, large, rigid object is called an echo. It usually occurs in hilly areas, very spacious rooms, etc.

  3. Reverberation - The sound heard after reflection when the rigid object is at a distance, not more than 17 meters is called reverberation.

  4. Types of waves - There are two types of waves in nature: Longitudinal waves and Transverse waves. Both of them are differentiated on the basis of their medium of propagation and the way they flow on the respective mediums.

  5. Resonance - Resonance is a special case of forced vibrations. Resonance occurs when the frequency of applied vibrations matches the natural vibrations of the body. The body picks up the applied vibrations and vibrates with an increased amplitude.

  6. Characteristics of sound - Pitch, Quality, and Loudness are the three characteristics of sound.

FAQs on ICSE Class 10 Physics Revision Notes Chapter 7 - Sound

1. Is ICSE Class 10 Physics Chapter 7 difficult?

No subject or chapter is difficult if students study it regularly and revise properly. Dedication and concentration towards studies are very important for class 10 students since their board exams are approaching. Studying and revising regularly will surely help students to ace their examinations. Before exams, it is very important to study from revision notes, as it will not cram up the students’ minds with too much information. Vedantu has all the revision notes prepared by professional subject experts, so students can follow these revision notes. Other than these, Class 10 students should also follow sample question papers, previous year papers, mock test papers, etc. to score good marks in exams.

2. What is sound according to Revision Notes for ICSE Class 10 Physics Chapter 7 - Free PDF download?

A sound is a form of vibrational energy. The vibrations create waves, which require a medium to transfer. These vibrations cannot travel in a vacuum. So, the sound is also termed a ‘mechanical wave’. These waves are of two types:

  • Longitudinal waves - The vibrations travel along with the medium of propagation, in these types of waves. In this medium, compressions and rarefactions are formed in the wave.

  • Transverse waves - In these types of waves, the vibrations travel in the direction perpendicular to propagation. In this medium, crests and troughs are formed.

3. What is an echo according to Revision Notes for ICSE Class 10 Physics Chapter 7 - Free PDF download?

Echo is the sound heard after reflection from some distant and rigid object. For the production of an echo, the size of the obstacle should be large. Also, a long duration of sound would not produce an echo, only a short duration of sound can produce one. The distance between the obstacle and the source of the sound should be at least 17 m, otherwise, an echo would not be produced. Also, the intensity of the sound should be such that it is heard even after the reflection.

4. What are the characteristics of sound according to Revision Notes for ICSE Class 10 Physics Chapter 7 - Free PDF download?

Pitch, loudness, and quality - these are the three characteristics of sound.

  • Pitch is the quality of sound that can differentiate between a shrill sound and a deep sound. The Pitch of a sound depends on the frequency or wavelength of the sound.

  • Loudness is the property by which a loud sound can be differentiated from a faint sound. Loudness depends on the amplitude, the distance of the body from the listener, and the density of the body.

  • Quality is the characteristic of the sound, by which we can differentiate two sounds of the same pitch and loudness. The quality of the sound depends on the waveform of the notes of sound.

5. Why are Revision Notes for ICSE Class 10 Physics Chapter 7 - Free PDF download important for ICSE Class 10 students?

Revision notes are very important irrespective of the class that a student studies in. For a class 10 student, their board exams will be approaching, so they won’t have any time to revise the entire book of so many subjects. This is where revision notes come into play. They are the compact forms of the book, so students can use them very wisely. They can prepare their own notes, or they can also avail revision notes from Vedantu free of cost. Students just have to download the revision notes from the Vedantu website or app.
