Bihar population in 2011

Bihar is the eastern state of India, bordered by Jharkhand in the south, Nepal in the North, Meghalaya on the east, and Uttar Pradesh in the west. It is the third-largest state in population after Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. As per Census, the Bihar population in 2011 was 104,099,452. According to the stats, there has been an increase from the population numbers of 82,999,509 from census 2001. Out of the total population of Bihar, 54,278,157 were males and 49,821,295 were females.


The population growth in the decade (2001-2011) was 25.42%. This growth rate for the last decade was 28.43%. The population of Bihar contributed to 8.6% of the total population of India in the year 2011 however it was 8.07 % in 2001.


The first census for Bihar was recorded at the time of British India’s rule in 1901 and at that time the population of the state was 21.24 million people. By 1951, the population of the state had increased to 29 million as per the first-ever census conducted by Independent India. There was a rise of 7.76 million in 50 years in the state of Bihar and most of it was during the British colonial rule. In the next 50 years, the population of Bihar had almost tripled, taking the numbers to 82 million according to the census conducted in the year 2001. In the last census conducted in 2011, the population was recorded as 104 million. There was an increased growth rate of 25% from the last census.

Official Language Of Bihar

The official languages of Bihar are Hindi and Urdu but the majority of the population speaks one of the Bihari languages - Bhojpuri, Magadhi, Maithili, or Angika. While Magahi and Bhojpuri are considered dialects of Hindi, Maithili, and Angika are not. Maithili holds the honour of being a recognized regional language of India as per the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India. Hindi is widely spoken throughout the state at 77%, followed by Maithili at 12.54% and Urdu at 8.4%. Hindi is the official and main language of the state even for people who speak Maithili and Urdu speakers. Other languages like Bengali, Punjabi, Gujarati are spoken by the migrated people and they represent less than 1% each.

Literacy Rate Of Bihar

The literacy rate in Bihar has seen an upward trend at 61.80 percent as per the 2011 population census. Out of this data, the male literacy rate stands at 71.20 percent while the female literacy rate is at 46.40 percent. The literacy rate for Bihar in 2001 was 47.00 percent, out of which the male literacy rate was 59.68 percent, and for females, it was 33.12 percent.
