  • In July 1976, a 37-year-old businessman, his wife Mary, six-year-old son Jonathan, and seven-year-old daughter Suzanne set sail from Plymouth, England, on a three-year, 105,000-kilometer journey to the world.

  •  They started in a 23-meter, 30-ton wooden-hulled boat named Wavewalker, which faced strong winds and waves up to 15 meters. On January 2, they faced a massive wave that shook the deck, causing the narrator to sink below the waves.

  • The narrator's head appeared out of the water, and he was thrown over the side of the boat like a rag doll. He was left with blood and broken teeth but managed to find the wheel and line up the stern for the next wave. 

  • Mary opened the door to the deck and shouted that they were sinking as the decks were broken. The narrator asked her to take the wheel, and Larry and Herb were pumping water out of the ship. The wooden beams had broken, and the starboard side had bulged inwards. Sue had a big bump on her head, and he found a hammer, screws, and canvas to repair her.

  • On January 3, the pumps reduced the amount of water on board, and they rested for two hours turn by turn. They survived for 15 hours since the wave hit the Wavewalker, but she was not strong enough to take them to Australia. 

  • The narrator calculated that there were two small islands a few hundred kilometres east and hoped to reach Le Amsterdam, a French scientific base. On January 4, after 36 hours of continuous pumping, they reached the last few centimetres of water.

  • Mary found corned beef and cracker biscuits, but their relief was short-lived. Black clouds began building up, and the wind returned to 40 knots. 

  • By dawn on January 5, the situation was extremely dangerous. The narrator tried to comfort the children and assure them that they could make it. He decided to fight the sea using an improvised sea anchor of heavy nylon rope and two 22-litre plastic barrels of paraffin.

  • On January 6, the wind became less severe, and the narrator got a reading on the sextant and made quick calculations. She gave him a card drawing caricatures of Mary and the narrator, and they called him the best daddy in the world and the best captain. 

  • They found the island of Ile Amsterdam, and the next morning, all 28 inhabitants of the island cheered them and helped them ashore.
