Q2: What is irrigation? Describe two methods of irrigation which conserve water.

The consistent supply of water to crops at regular intervals of time is known as irrigation. The methods of irrigation that help conserve water are as follows:

  • Drip Irrigation: In the drip irrigation method, the water goes drop by drop directly into the roots. This method is very useful as it conserves as well as provides the plats with the necessary amount of water. It is also helpful as it helps in avoiding weed growth thereby protecting the plants.

  • Sprinkler system: This method is mainly used in uneven land where water is not available sufficiently. The perpendicular pipes, having rotating nozzles on top, are joined to the main pipeline at regular intervals. When water is allowed to flow through the main pipe under pressure with the help of a pump, it escapes from the rotating nozzles. It gets sprinkled on the crop in an even manner. The amount of water being sprinkled can be controlled based on the availability of water.

Q3: Explain the following : (1) Preparation of soil (2) Weeding.

A3: (1) Preparation of soil - a) The first step of agriculture is the Preparation of the soil.agriculture. Preparation of the soil is done to loosen the soil. This is essential for proper root penetration into the soil. This allows the roots to breathe easily. Loosening of the soil will also allow the growth of earthworms and microorganisms, that will help them to keep the soil fertile by adding humus to it. Loosening of soil also brings nutrient-rich soil to the top layer, which aids in the healthy growth of plants.

(2) Weeding - Removing unnecessary plants from the field is called weeding. Weeds compete with crop plants for nutrients and water from the soil. This will reduce the yield of the desired crops. Weeds also interfere while harvesting. They get mixed with crops reducing their quality. Certain weeds are also poisonous for the consumption of animals and humans. Tilling is a common method which helps removal of weeds before sowing crops. Also, manual methods like physical removal of plants are used to remove weeds. Weedicides are sprayed to get rid of weeds. However, this method may affect the health of farmers because of chemicals present in the weedicides.
