Chapter 14 - When The Earth Shook

NCERT Solutions for Class 5 EVS Chapter 14

Ch 14 Class 5 EVS discusses the earthquake and its aftermath in the Kutch area of Gujarat. Jasma, the survivor, further states that since 2001, the earthquake terror faced by her still haunts her with nightmares. It has become a bad dream for her. Class 5th EVS Chapter 14 discusses the helping hands that arrived at the spot, the dos and don’ts during the earthquake and many other important things related to the natural calamities.

A Bad Dream

Jasma, the survivor of the earthquake faced one of the most traumatic and destructive earthquakes that happened on 26th January 2001 in Bhuj in cold winter. Almost everything from clothes, pots, grains and food was destroyed and trapped under the earth and houses had fallen. Even hospitals were destroyed and damaged. The only things people thought of was saving people and treating them. The sarpanch of the village fed the villagers as his house was not much damaged. He was known as Motabapu, who gave rice and wheat from his godown and village women cooked for the entire village people at his house.

Assistance by Voluntary Groups and Government Agencies

Class 5 EVS Chapter 14 When The Earth Shook talks about the help that arrived in Gujarat including food, medicines and clothes. Tents were put up with the help of the villagers, but they were made of plastic which couldn’t protect them from severe cold.

  • People from different agencies, military men, voluntary groups and scientists arrived to visit the village to provide relief funds and measures. Scientists tested to find out the areas more prone to earthquakes.

  • Engineers and architects suggested specially designed houses that would not get damaged in an earthquake. These houses will be safer if the earthquake takes place again. However, villagers were hesitant to build such new houses hence decided to build their own houses.

  • Doctors worked hard in treating the injured and taking care of the survivors.

  • Even animals such as dogs were of great help during such a situation. They traced out the bodies trapped under the debris.

How were houses built in villages?

Villagers worked together to build houses by bringing clay from the pond and mixing it with the cow dung. The blocks prepared with cow dung and clay were placed one over the other to make walls. The walls were whitewashed, decorated with beautiful designs and pieces of the mirror with a thatched roof.

Note: Class 5 EVS ch 14 NCERT Solutions has around 19 questions given at the end of each topic solved accurately.

Do’s and Don’ts during the Earthquake

Class 5 Chapter 14 Solutions tell what can be done during the earthquake to avoid a mishap.

  • It says one must possibly leave the house and stand in the open ground.

  • If going out is not possible, one must lie under the tough thing like a table and hold it tightly. Make sure the tough thing does not move or slip away. This is because, if a house collapses, the table can save from injury.

TV report on Earthquake

Class 5 EVS Chapter 14 When The Earth Shook has discussed the earthquake report stating the scary situation in Gujarat where more than 1000 people might have died. The buildings that collapsed were multi-storeyed with around 250 bodies trapped under the debris.

If the buildings have been made with the material that would not fall in the earthquake, would the damage have been different? How?

The fear of destruction caused by earthquakes is considerably huge. Here, most of the people are not educated and literate to know the real cause of destruction due to the earthquakes. Countless lives are lost because of the house or huge constructions that collapsed. Hence, if the buildings have been constructed earthquake-proof, they would not fall and fewer calamities would have occurred.

FAQs on NCERT Solutions For Class 5 Evs Chapter 14 When The Earth Shook - 2025-26

1. According to NCERT Class 5 EVS Chapter 14, what essential help is required for people immediately after an earthquake?

Based on the NCERT textbook, the immediate help required after an earthquake includes:

  • Medical Aid: First aid for the injured and medical care for those trapped under debris.

  • Food and Water: Clean drinking water and ready-to-eat food packets are crucial as regular supplies are disrupted.

  • Temporary Shelter: Tents or other safe shelters are needed to protect people from the cold and harsh weather, especially if their homes are destroyed.

  • Basic Supplies: Essential items like clothes, blankets, and medicines must be provided to the victims.

2. How should a student correctly answer the NCERT question about the difficulties faced by people during floods?

To answer this question as per the CBSE pattern, you should explain that floods cause widespread destruction. The correct method is to mention that everything comes to a standstill. Key difficulties include the destruction of homes, crops, and farms, leading to huge financial loss for farmers. Moreover, transportation becomes extremely risky as roads and bridges get submerged or washed away, making it difficult for people to move to safer places or for help to arrive.

3. What is the correct way to explain the concepts of 'drought' and 'famine' as per the Class 5 EVS syllabus?

The correct explanation for a Class 5 student is:

  • Drought: This is a condition where there is very little or no rain for a long time. This causes the land to dry up, and there is a severe shortage of water for farming and daily needs.

  • Famine: This is a consequence of severe drought or other calamities. It is a situation where there is an extreme scarcity of food, leading to widespread hunger and starvation among people and animals.

4. What were the different types of groups that came to help Jasma's village after the earthquake in the chapter 'When the Earth Shook'?

In NCERT Chapter 14, various groups helped Jasma's village. The solutions should mention help from:

  • People from the cities: They came with food, water, medicines, and clothes.

  • Non-Government Organisations (NGOs): These groups helped in setting up temporary tents for shelter.

  • Scientists and Engineers: They came to suggest special designs for houses that would not get damaged easily in an earthquake.

  • The community itself: Villagers, including Jasma, worked together to rebuild their homes and support each other.

5. Why is it important for scientists and engineers to design special earthquake-resistant houses, as mentioned in the NCERT solutions?

It is crucial for scientists and engineers to design special houses because many people die or get injured when buildings collapse during an earthquake. Earthquake-resistant houses are built with materials and designs that can withstand the shaking of the ground. This helps in minimising damage to property and, most importantly, saving human lives. This preventative measure is a long-term solution to reduce the impact of future earthquakes.

6. If you were in a situation like the one described in Chapter 14, what three safety measures should you take during an earthquake?

Based on disaster safety guidelines relevant to the NCERT chapter, the three most important safety measures to take during an earthquake are:

  • If indoors, immediately drop, cover, and hold on. Get under a sturdy table or desk and hold on to it.

  • Stay away from windows, glass, and heavy furniture that could fall and cause injury.

  • If outdoors, move to an open area away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and power lines to avoid falling debris.

7. How does living together in a community provide a solution during a crisis like an earthquake, based on 'When the Earth Shook'?

The chapter shows that a strong community is a vital support system. When people live together, they can immediately help each other without waiting for outside aid. They share their sorrows and resources, help pull out those trapped under debris, provide emotional support, and work together to rebuild their homes and lives. This collective effort ensures faster recovery and helps everyone cope with the tragedy together.
