Class 10 ICSE Chemistry Paper Pattern

Chemistry paper by ICSE for Class 10 follows a certain pattern of syllabus and marks distribution. The Chemistry syllabus is prepared in such a way that it allows students to get a deeper insight into the subject. Knowing the paper pattern of the subject will help students to understand the marks distribution and prepare for the exam properly. The Chemistry exam of Class 10 occurs for two hours and is of 80 marks. This final board exam contains the syllabus of the entire year that is both semesters one and two. The remaining 20 marks are taken from the internal assessment which comprises two 40 marks tests taken in Semester one and Semester two respectively.

The paper for Chemistry Class 10 contains two sections: Section I and Section II. Section one has short questions worth 40 marks and all the questions are compulsory. While Section two has five questions out of which students are required to attempt any four. Each question in this section is worth 10 marks, making the total a complete eighty. Periodic Properties and Variants of Properties

This chapter deals with the properties and variations in groups and periods of the periodic table. The chapter is introduced with the definitions of some important terms like atomic size, metallic character, electronegativity, etc.

Chemical Bonding

This chapter introduces the students to a new concept of chemical bonding between atoms or molecules. The different types of bonding discussed in this chapter include electrovalent, covalent bonding and coordinate bonding, structures of various compounds, etc. Students also learn about electron dot diagrams and the comparison of electrovalent and covalent compounds.

Study of Acids, Bases, and Salts

Analytical Chemistry

Electrolysis

This chapter teaches the students about electrolytes and non-electrolytes and their definitions and examples. The students are also introduced to terms like electrode, anode, cathode, anion, and cation, etc. Selective discharge of ions, migration of ions, and other methods of electrolysis are also taught.

Metallurgy

This chapter talks about the occurrence of metals in nature and their derivation from the pure form called ore to its commercially viable form. The chapter also gives extra attention to the extraction of aluminum from its ore and the process of refining. The last portion of the chapter talks about alloys.

Study of Compounds

This chapter of the Class 10 Chemistry syllabus talks about various compounds and studies them in detail. Compounds like ammonia, hydrogen chloride, Nitric acid, sulphuric acid, etc. are discussed. Their chemical structure, manufacturing process, reactions with oxidizing agents, and other properties like solubility, density are discussed.

Organic Chemistry

The last chapter of the Class 10 syllabus of Chemistry proves to be setting a foundation for the major portions of class 11 and 12 Chemistry. This chapter discusses the compounds containing organic elements such as carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. Later in the chapter, students are taught about the nomenclature, catenation, tetravalency, etc. of the organic compounds.
