A Tiger and a Man Short Story Summary in English

Once upon a time, a hungry tiger was searching for food. He came across a deer inside a cage. Upon entering, he had a nice time feasting on it. Only when he wanted to leave the cage he realised that he was somehow locked inside it. He tried his best to get out by clawing and biting the grills and even pushing his entire body weight against the cage, but it did not budge.

Just as the tiger was about to get frantic since he would starve to death if he is locked in the cage forever, he noticed a man walking towards the cage. It was then he decided to come up with a plan to escape.

When the man saw the tiger, he was scared at first. Then he realised he was inside a cage and noticed the tiger praying with his eyes closed. When the tiger opened his eyes, he told the man not to be afraid and that God had a message for him. When the man questioned him, the tiger said that he could only convey the message by whispering it since it was a secret; he needed to come out of the cage.

The man was frightened at first, but his belief in divinity gave him the courage to open the cage and let him out. When the tiger was out, he told the man that the message from God was to feed the tiger, and the food was the man’s body. Sensing the man’s hesitation upon hearing this, the tiger became angry and cursed the man. The man suggested that they take the opinion of three judges to see if he should give himself to the tiger to be killed or not, to which the tiger accepted.

They went into the forest searching for three animals and came across a donkey, crocodile, and fox and explained their case to them. The donkey explained that even after working for many years as a slave for his human owner, he was discarded and beaten regularly; hence, the man should die.

The crocodile said that his wife was shot by a hunter and skinned for her skin to make leather bags for the hunter's wife and was of the opinion that the man must die. The fox admitted that their story was confusing and wanted to see the place where it all happened.

The three of them walked back to the cage, and the fox wanted to see the entire scene again in front of his eyes. That said, he asked the tiger to go back inside the cage to see the man open it. When the tiger entered the cage, the fox quickly locked it and asked the man to run for his life. Extremely grateful for the fox’s actions, the man fled, followed by the fox. The fate of the tiger still remains unknown.

A Tiger and a Man Short Story Moral

There are many morals in this story, each one equally important as the other. One of them is the act of quick thinking, where thinking extremely fast and coming up with a solution at that moment will very much help in getting one out of trouble. Being sly might also work, only towards the people who approach you with bad intentions, because if you act sly and over-smart with good people, it will only backfire.

Another moral of the story is to help others who are unable to voice it out for themselves. Here, the fox knew that the man would die based on his opinion. As a result, the fox faked his confusion in order to trap the tiger and save the man’s life.
