Introduction

This story is all about a beautiful peacock and a nightingale with a beautiful voice. The story explains how the nightingale teaches the peacock a life lesson. What did the peacock do? Why did he need a life lesson from the nightingale? Let us find out by reading this story.

The Peacock and the Nightingale Short Story

There was a deep forest where many birds lived in harmony. Everyone has different features and was happy. Once, the summer season was long and the birds were unable to withstand the heat.

There lived a peacock. He had a beautiful plumage and every bird admired him. Due to her beautiful plumage, the peacock was unable to withstand the heat of this summer. All he wanted was the rain to come and relieve him from this miserable weather.

The Nightingale’s Voice

One day, the peacock saw dark clouds approaching the horizon. He was so happy. He knew that it was going to rain heavily and all the birds would be saved from the scorching heat.

He did not even finish his thoughts. The clouds roared and rain started to pour on her. He was so happy that he spread his beautiful feathers and started dancing in the rain. All the birds were happy.

The nightingale was very happy too. He was sitting on a branch of a tree nearby. He saw the beautiful peacock dancing and started singing. The peacock was fascinated by the beautiful voice of the nightingale.

The Peacock Dancing and the Nightingale Singing

He also felt the urge to sing and dance together. When he started singing, no proper tone came out. His voice was not good at all. He felt frustrated that he cannot sing like the small nightingale bird.

He stopped dancing due to frustration and watched how the bird kept singing. He was not happy as the nightingale was singing even though he couldn't.

The Nightingale’s Lesson

The peacock waited for the rain to be over. Once it was over, they approached the nightingale and said, “Don’t you have any shame? You know birds like me cannot sing like you but you continued to sing to mock us.”

The peacock was upset and his words reflected the same. He knew that he cannot sing and it was his weakness.

The nightingale paused his singing and said to the peacock, “My friend, you are the most beautiful bird I have ever seen. What if you cannot sing? Your feathers make you the brightest of all. You are blessed to be such a beautiful bird who can dance. We cannot dance at all.”

The nightingale continued, “You are blessed to be a great dancer with such beautiful feathers. You should be happy with what you have. We do not have feathers and we cannot dance. I am happy with my singing. If I have offended you, I can stop singing.”

The peacock realised his mistake. He apologised to the nightingale and felt happy about his feathers and dancing.

The peacock continued dancing and the nightingale continued singing happily.
