The Nail Soup

One soldier’s home was far away from the battlefield. He wanted to rest a while before his journey began. He was tired and had nothing to eat.

He approached the village and knocked on every door. Every homeowner refused to help and told him to go somewhere else. He was sad and frustrated with the fact that villagers lacked gratitude. Even though they had abundance, they could not give him food and a place to rest.

Frustrated, the soldier lay down on a bench empty stomach. He found a few nails lying on the ground. The bench was newly made. Suddenly, he had the idea of teaching the villagers a lesson.

The Soldier’s Plan

He yelled, “Come, everyone. I will make a delicious soup with nails that my grandmother taught me long ago. You can eat it for free.”

Everyone heard what the soldier said. They were sceptical a little. They approached and asked him, “How can you possibly make a delicious soup out of nails?”

He replied, “Have patience. This is what the kings and queens have and live longer. Bring me a pitcher with water. I have the nails.”

The villagers brought him a pitcher. He set a fire and put the pitcher on it. He said, “It will taste better with flour and oatmeal.” Out of curiosity, villagers brought him the ingredients.

After a few minutes, he said, “Bring me carrots, potatoes, onions, pumpkin and radish.” The villagers did what he asked.

He said, “Bring me spices to see how the royal kitchen makes this soup.” People doubted his intentions. He said, “If you disagree, I will go to the next village and teach them how to make it.”

He then said, “Bring me a piece of bread, a bowl and a spoon.” The villagers did what he asked for.

The Lesson for the Villagers

An old woman asked, “What about the nails?” She was one of them who had earlier refused to help the soldier.

While eating the bread and soup, he said, “You can keep the nails. When someone knocks on your door for help, give them to him and tell him to make a nail soup.”

All the villagers realied their mistake and were ashamed of their deeds. They apologised and let the soldier rest for a while before he left for his home.

He shared the soup with all and danced with joy.
