About Lanka

Lanka is an island situated at the end of the India border. Lanka was the capital of the legendary asura king Ravana in the epics of the Ramayana. The fortress was situated on a plateau between three mountain peaks referred to as the Trikuta Mountains. The traditional city of Lankapura is said to have been burnt down by Hanuman. After its king, Ravana was killed by Rama with the assistance of Ravana's brother Vibhishana, the latter was crowned king of Lankapura.

Ravana was furious and angry that Hanuman had come to Lanka as Lord Rama's messenger. He ordered Vibhishana to line Hanuman's tail on fire and take him in a procession through the streets of Lanka.

Accordingly, Hanuman's tail was tied with a rope and wrapped in cloth and put the fire on his tail. As Hanuman started walking down the streets, lanka’s people laughed at him.

Sita begged Lord Agnideva not to hurt Hanuman. Lord Agnideva cooled his flames and though Hanuman's tail was still on fire it didn't hurt him. Meanwhile, Hanuman decided to have some fun. Shrinking in body size he quickly shook off the rope. Then leaping from building to putting them together, he set them on fire. Soon the whole city of Lanka was burning.


Fearing that his prank may have hurt Sita, Hanuman rushed to work out her but was relieved to see her safe.


Then bidding her farewell, he jumped into the ocean and across to Rama.

Summary 

Vibhishana was instructed by Ravana to set Hanuman's tail on fire and parade him around the streets of Lanka. Lord Agnideva was urged not to harm Hanuman by Sita. Before leaping from a building to combine them, Hanuman decided to have some fun and shook free the rope. Lanka's entire city was soon on fire.
