Hint: The Preamble is a document with which a Constitution begins. As mentioned in the Preamble, India is considered to be a republic country because the President who is the head of the state is elected for a definite period and his office is not hereditary.
Complete Step by Step answer: The Preamble underlines the main objectives which a Constitution is intended to achieve. It embodies the principles on the basis of which administration of the country is run. The hopes and aspirations of the framers of the Constitution can be seen through its preamble. Indian Constitution also begins with a Preamble like all other Constitutions of other States. In simple terms, it is an introduction to the Constitution. The five major ideals enshrined in Preamble of the Indian Constitution are as follows –
1. Justice is of three types – social, economic and political. Social justice means the prohibition of discrimination on the basis of religion, caste, community, race, colour or sex. Economic justice means that the wealth of the nation should be distributed in such a way so that the people might derive maximum benefit. Finally, political justice implies the enjoyment of equal political rights by all the citizens.
2. Liberty of thought, expression, faith, worship and belief are assured by the Preamble as every citizen requires various freedoms for the fullest development of his personality.
3. The Preamble speaks of equality of opportunity and status and no one can be discriminated against on the basis of caste, religion, creed, colour or sex.
4. Fraternity is a principle which gives unity and solidarity to one’s social life. This is the reason why communal electorate and untouchability has been abolished.
5. To achieve unity and integrity of the Nation as mentioned in the Preamble, India declared itself a secular state and the principle of single citizenship has been adopted.
Note: Preamble is an index to the social and political structure of the society, hence it is also called an ‘index of the Constitution’. ‘Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic, Republic, Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity’ are the keywords mentioned in the Preamble.
