In 1951 Mayurakshi Project was taken up for execution and it was completed in the year 1985 from all perspectives. The state of Jharkhand is also supplied with his irrigation water to an area of about 6,000 hectares. This project is one of the best performing irrigation projects in India. At present irrigation is provided to Boro crops with favorable rainfall for an area of 20,000 hectares approximately. Construction of a barrage across the Mayurakshi River at Tilpara, near Suri, is also involved in this project. About 4,000 KW of electricity is generated through this project which is supplied to Murshidabad, Birbhum (West Bengal), and Santhal Pargana (Jharkhand).
