Pre-RMO stands for Pre Regional Mathematical Olympiad is a qualifying event for the International Mathematical Olympiad.

Think of pre-RMO as a warm-up for the real thing – this is a chance to meet quite a few people who will be your competitors in the ICM and IIM. Pre-RMO is also a great opportunity to improve those skills that you know will be needed for the next stage.

The only official requirement for the preliminary round is to have at least one problem from arithmetic, algebra, geometry, analysis, combinatorics, and number theory- not necessarily in that order. The exact number of problems will vary depending on time and space availability.

A Pre-RMO usually begins with a registration day. This is meant to coordinate all students arriving for the event into one venue.

PRMO Examination Pattern

Different Stages of the Pre- Regional Mathematical Olympiad

When asked to explain the pre-regional mathematical Olympiad, many people might think of the idea of math Olympiads in general. However, people also tend to overlook the fact that not all mathematical competitions are created equal. Some take much longer than others and some require considerably more work (and time) than others. Understanding what makes this event unique requires a bit of conceptualization based on known events related to this type of competition.

In traditional math competitions, the tasks are typically pretty straightforward. For instance, a series of calculations are given and the competitors must simply calculate the requested number. In other cases, the competitor will be asked to solve a problem or answer a question by filling in a missing variable. Another task sometimes found is asking for the numerical value of an expression. The problems can be single-step or multi-step; this is where some competitions begin to differentiate themselves from others.

Different Stages of the Pre- Regional Mathematical Olympiad:

When the problem at hand requires more than one step, it is called an open-ended task (de Bruijn et al., 1999; van der Vleuten & van der Knapp, 1996). Some problems will be a single step and others with many steps, but in either case, they require a series of steps to find an answer. The Pre-Regional Mathematical Olympiad (PRMO) is unique in the sense that the problems are generally multi-step and require not only the mental ability but also analytic skills. The math questions are far more complex than in traditional Olympic math competitions; these problems are much more advanced, often requiring at least some knowledge of calculus (Hautamäki & J.A. Laine, 2010).

The PRMO is also different from other Olympiads in the sense that it is internationally inclusive. It gives young people the chance to compete with individuals from all over the world while remaining at their level of ability.

Pre RMO Exam Pattern:

Students who are willing to appear in the Pre RMO exam should be aware of the exam pattern beforehand. Besides knowing the Pre RMO exam syllabus, they should also be aware of the Pre RMO exam dates and the exam pattern. This exam is conducted for three hours in total. A total of 30 questions will be asked in this Mathematics exam and the answer to each question will be either a single-digit number or a double-digit number. The medium of the question paper will be English or Hindi.
