About the National Science Olympiad (NSO)

National Science Olympiad (NSO) is an annual competition for high school and middle school students to determine the nation’s best and brightest student science minds. This year, winning scores will be determined by a new rubric that reflects how science is changing in the real world; we hope it will encourage more students to consider science careers.

It is organised by SOF for the selection of the best teams from different states in India for participation in the International Science Olympiad (IO).

The main objective of the National Science Olympiad is to find students who have a knack for Science and nurture them to make them successful in this field. The ultimate goal of NSO is to promote science, encourage students to pursue studies and careers in sciences, and provide opportunities for them to develop intellectual leadership skills that will enable them to take up leadership positions at national or global level.

The first National Science Olympiad was conducted from May 21 to May 22, 1996. In 2001 SOF started an event called "National Science Quiz" which is conducted every year before the commencement of the National Science Olympiad.

Year-wise NSO events and its syllabus are available on the SOF official website.

In order to prepare young minds for challenges posed by the International Science Olympiad, SOF also organises various camps, lab sessions and workshops. This forms an integral part of the Olympiad Development Program to train the students in various spheres of science.

Campus Selection Camps were conducted in 21 different cities from 21–28 July 2015. The same was conducted from 8–12 July 2016. The Event is conducted for talented students to identify them and further nurture their talent in Science and Mathematics.

Workshops are conducted to provide hands-on experience to students. The workshops are usually conducted alongside the NSO event, either at the same venue or at another city.

SOF has started conducting lab sessions for students to gain practical knowledge about various fields of science. The first lab session was conducted on 16 July 2017 at SOF national office, Lucknow.

Alok Kumar was the founder President of SOF and currently serves as its patron. 

Benefits of Participating in Olympiads

There are a number of benefits that come from participating in Olympiads, arguably the most important being the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills. Problem solving is an essential skill for any career, and learning how to do it through participation in Olympiads will give you an advantage over your peers.

There are also social benefits: the most obvious is making friends with incredibly smart people! But there's also a sense of togetherness — we know you're all in this together. When you're at one another's company, it can be easy to make one another feel inadequate; Olympiads are probably the only group where you'll meet smart people whose intellectual superiority is both well acknowledged and willingly acknowledged.

And there's also an aspect of expectation management: because you know how good everyone else is at this stuff (and how good they think they are, too), you're able to set proper expectations for yourself.

Lastly, there's the allure of the unknown. There are always some problems you've never dreamed of encountering, with their own set of solutions; sometimes they can be devilishly hard! (Not generated by SAT-style generators, either; I'm talking about genuine, hand generated challenges.)

The benefits don't stop at high school either. Many Olympiad alumni stay in touch with each other; this can help you with internships and getting into graduate school (or even just for guidance on your job application). You'll also probably come into contact with people outside of your academic field, and that's always a good thing.

And the best part: students don't have to compete against everyone in their age range to reap these benefits — if they want to set higher standards for themselves, they can compete against older and younger groups of people! Students won't be competing against kids and teens — but they don't think that means it's overkill: participating in Olympiads will only  give them the tools to keep raising their standards.

By participating in science olympiads, children and adults can share knowledge about the world around them and how it functions. Science Olympiads also teach students to be quick thinkers and problem solvers. Science olympiads provide an opportunity for immediate feedback which is crucial when learning a complicated task not just for students but adults as well. Teaching skills such as timekeeping, memorization techniques, and concentration make science olympiads a significant component of the 21st-century education system.

The benefits of participating in science olympiads are amazing. For starters, they raise interest in science and technology, which helps to create more scientifically informed communities. Students who participate in science olympiads gain critical thinking skills and learn about technology before entering college. It is estimated that 80 percent of jobs will require some kind of post-secondary education. Students who participate in Science Olympiads are on track to be on that list of college educated adults.

Centralization, democratization, and transparency are part of a successful science olympiad. The main problems that occur in a centralized system is that people do not have an open mind to all ideas and skills. Participating in a democratic process helps to create a culture of teamwork which is very necessary when working with different students from around the world. In addition, the leader-less process makes it easier for students to practice leadership skills.

1. What is the NSO Answer Key?

Ans: The Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) releases the answer key of NSO in online mode at official sites. Students can download the NSO answer keys 2023 from the official sites and check their probable scores. Many coaching institutes also release the NSO 2023 answer key for SET A & B right after the commencement of the exam. The NSO answer key 2023 comprises correct answers to each question asked in the exam. Students can calculate the expected marks obtained in the SOF NSO exam with the help of the answer key.

2. How to Prepare For NSO Exams?

Ans: Here are a few tips to prepare for the NSO exams:

  • If you are appearing for NSO, then prepare for answering questions of varying difficulty levels that test your logical and observational skills.

  • Solving sample papers will give you a fair idea of the pattern of the questions asked. They are also good for improving the speed to attempt the paper in a limited amount of time.

  • You must thoroughly study course books suggested by your board like ICSE, CBSE or State Board.

 3. What are the Factors Determining NSO Cut off?

Ans: The NSO cutoff marks vary due to the various factors listed below:

  • The total number of applications received.

  • A total number of students who appeared in the NSO examination.

  • The difficulty level of the question paper.

4. What is the NSO Exam Paper Pattern?

Ans: The NSO exam pattern is determined by the SOF and it varies for different classes. For classes 1 to 4, a total of 35 questions are asked and the time duration is one hour. While for classes 5 to 12, a total of 50 questions are asked and the total time duration remains the same, that is one hour. The medium of the NSO exam is English. NSO is conducted during school hours only. According to the NSO exam pattern 2023 level 1, the question paper consists of three sections. The sections for Classes 1 to 10 include - Logical Reasoning, Science, Achievers Section while for Class 11 and 12, they are - Chemistry/Physics, Achievers Section, Biology/Mathematics.

5. What is the Syllabus of National Science Olympiad organized by SOF of class 9?

Ans: National Science Olympiad is a classical event for students of class 9th. It is organized by SOF of class 9th and will be held on 10, 11 and 12 March 2018. This year there are two sections in the olympiad: mathematics and chemistry. The tests will be of 2 hours duration with 60 questions (40 in maths, 20 in chemistry). A student can participate in both the sections if he/she wishes to do so. The test will be conducted in two shifts, at 10:00 am and 2:30 pm.


The qualifying rounds of the National Science Olympiad are held in various districts. In the first round there are two papers of one hour duration each. The subjects are mathematics and chemistry. The second round has three papers of one hour duration each. The subjects are mathematics, physics and chemistry. The first, second and third position holders in the qualifying rounds will be eligible for selection to participate in the National Science Olympiad to be held at Jammu during March, 2018.
