Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research has created its niche among the top 5 medical schools in India. It is a part of a handful of institutions providing teaching facilities at various levels including undergraduate, super-speciality and subspecialty. The examination conducted is also among the top 3 medical exams of the country.

A candidate who has completed class 12th with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology and English is eligible for the exam. The mode of the examination is online and it is conducted in the English language. The examination is conducted for 2.5 hours. All the questions are objective multiple-choice questions (MCQs). Each correct answer will give you 4 marks and an incorrect question will deduct 1 mark.

1. Who can write JIPMER?

An Indian citizen or an NRI who is registered under section 7A of the Citizenship Act of 1955 is eligible. An OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card will also be required if applicable. The eligibility criteria for other courses which include- PhD, PG, Diploma and certification courses are prescribed by the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research. Since the exam has now been merged with NEET the candidates must also check the eligibility criteria prescribed by NTA. 

2. How many JIPMER institutes are there in India?

JIPMER has been identified as an “institute of national importance” since 2008.it is a prestigious institute. There are two medical colleges that accept JIPMER’s score. They are as follows:

  • JIPMER Puducherry: It was established in 1965. 200 seats are available here.

  • JIPMER Karaikal: It was established in 2016. It will be expanded with a multi-speciality hospital. 50 seats are available here.

Smart classes are taken for these students. Full-time courses are available. The courses are available in 11 disciplines. 

3. What is special about JIPMER?

JIPMER is famed for being the first institution to teach about European Medicine in the Asian continent. Various courses are offered which include undergraduate and postgraduate courses. It is also a functional hospital providing medical treatments to people who come there from across the globe. The old college is located in the beautiful city of Pondicherry and the new one can be found in Karaikal city. It is a central government institution under the purview of the Ministry of Health in India.

4. Is JIPMER better than AIIMS as a medical college?

Although AIIMS is considered the best medical college throughout the country, JIPMER is also among one of the top 5 medical colleges the country possesses. Apart from the academic atmosphere, the quality of the teachers is also commendable. The infrastructure at JIPMER being new and unique is an added advantage. It is comparable with the new AIIMS colleges like Bhopal, Jodhpur, Patna etc. There are 28 academic departments and the college has extremely high merit. It is a good choice for any candidate aspiring to enter the medical field.

5. Are NCERT books enough for JIPMER?

As far as qualifying for the exam is concerned, NCERTs might be considered sufficient. But since this is a highly competitive exam, additional books can be referred. This will be helpful for the candidate in getting a good rank. No doubt NCERTs can still be the primary source for the candidates as they create a rock-solid foundation for the basic concepts. Once the fundamentals are covered, apt reference books can be used to increase the knowledge base. This should help the candidate to be adequately prepared.
